The most-visited city in Finland is Helsinki which is also its capital city and a famous seaport along the Gulf of Finland via the Baltic Sea. This historic city faces Tallin, Estonia and its western part is St. Petersburg, Russia. The climate in Helsinki is a combination of maritime and continental. People go to Helsinki to witness the Northern Lights during winter, but the best time to go here to enjoy the sun is during summer.

Brief History

Helsinki was founded in 1550 when Sweden's King Gustravus Vasa made the city a trading post to compete Tallin. Russia reigned over the city during the 18th century and made it the capital of Finland in 1812. Helsinki made its mark in the history of sport by hosting the Summer Olympic Games in 1952.

There are lots of festivals in Helinski and most of them are held every summer including the Helsinki Day in June, the Kaivopuiston Kansanjuhla which is a huge concert that runs from July to August, and the Helsingin Juhlaviikot which is an arts fest held from August to September. Helsinki boasts of its impressive architecture as seen from its main landmarks including the Helsinki Cathedral, Olympic Stadium, Parliament House, Sibelius Monument, Finnish National Opera House and Finlandia Hall. A trip to Helsinki won't be complete without visiting the Suomenlinna which is a remarkable sea fortress.

Transportation

Enjoy the views and travel conveniently by taking the tram. Other modes of transportation in Helsinki are the bus, metro, train and ferry. Driving around Helsinki is not advisable because parking is expensive.
