Location, Climate
Munich ranks number three in Germany's most populated city. It is situated on the northern Bavarian Alps and features the rivers of Wurm and Isar. Munich's continental climate makes its winter really cold so it is best to visit the city during summer but expect sudden rainfall during this time.
Brief History
The name of the city was derived from the German word meaning “monk” because it was discovered near the Benedictine monastery during the 9th century. Munich suffered a lot during war because of the Nazis reign over the city, but it was able to rebuild itself in 1957 making it one of the leading cities in Germany.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
Munich is known worldwide for hosting the annual Oktoberfest, but there are other events in the city that continue to attract thousands of visitors including the Carnival Season which is held every January to February, Strong Beer Festival held every March, and the Tollwood Festival held every summer and winter. The best way to start sightseeing is at St. Mary's Square where you can find the Column of St. Mary, New and Old Town Hall, Glockenspiel and Fish Fountain. Don't miss out on Munich's most popular attractions including the Frauenkirche, Nymphenburg Palace, HofBrauhaus, BMW Museum and Odeonsplatz. Be one with nature and wildlife by visiting the Munich Zoo and English Garden.
Transportation
The cheapest way to get around Munich is by bike but there are also trams, trains and buses in the city that can take you to your destination faster. Taxis are better than driving a car because of the expensive parking.
