The traditionally styled exterior of the hotel is well kept and the building is accessible from all sides. There is a reception lounge area which is kept in perfect condition and has a cosy, homely atmosphere. All of the hotel's public areas are decorated in old Swiss mountain style with extensive use of dark wooden beams, carvings and furnishings.
Among the notable highlights are indoor tennis and squash courts, swimming pool, a grill room headed by Zermatt's finest chef and a lively club/disco. Stone fireplaces and oriental rugs set the theme of the public areas and as for the guest rooms, they are as spacious and tastefully furnished as any to be found in town.
The Alex is a splendid hotel and is especially recommended to guests looking for a modern hotel with a truly traditional flavour and splendid levels of service.

Alex Hotel is conveniently located beside the station, just a short stroll from the main street and overlooks the valley of Zermatt.

We stayed 1 week at Hotel Alex March 2004 for part of our honeymoon.
The staff was very nice, the room was large and overall the hotel was a very nice hotel. The decor is unusual to say the least, a little rustic, a little contemporary, in fact, a little of everything. The food was very good, although they did have a tendency to serve a little too fast. Their spa area (steam room, sauna..) was very nice, one of the best we have seen, especially for a smaller hotel.
Overall I would say that, considering it was Zermatt, Hotel Alex was a good value for money and a nice play to stay. I would recommend it if you are going to Zermatt.

The Hotel Alex is everything you imagine a Swiss Alpine hotel should be. Intricately carved wood, crackling fires, and a genuinely friendly and attentive staff. The rooms are very nice, with all of the expected amenities including terrycloth robes hairdryers, and fluffy down duvets. We had a very large balcony that looked out on the Matterhorn and the surrounding mountains. The hotel is very well-located, just a half-block off the main Bahnhafstrasse, and the Gornegrat lift. We used their tennis courts, squash court and swimming pool-- all of which made the trip that much more fun. At night we played billiards and even talked to our friends from home in their internet room. Our waiter, Wilhelm, personally prepared a delicious traditional raclette dinner for us one night, and Alex Perren (the owner) greets you in the bar and amazes you with stories about Zermatt over the years. If you are looking for something a bit less commercial than the Zermattherhof, but something equally as nice, the Hotel Alex is the place to stay! I would definitely go back there.
