Basseterre is the capital of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies. If you’re wondering where that is, well… The West Indies are situated… not on the West of India. The West Indies is a grouping which includes the Caribbean Islands, and the Lucayan Archipelago. Basseterre is one of the oldest towns in the Eastern Caribbean and it is situated on the bay of the St. Kitts shore. The city lays in a valley, but is surrounded by magnificent green hills and mountains. The weather here is warm and has constant temperatures throughout the year. In Basseterre we find a tropical rainforest climate, but there is no rainy season; on the contrary, here each month receives a balanced amount of rain. The average temperature is 25-29 degrees Celsius, with 1700 mm annual rainfalls.

The city dates back to 1627, when it was founded by the French. Sieur Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc was the one responsible with building the city which served as the capital of Saint Cristophe. In 1639 Phillipe de Longviliers de Poincy was named governor of St Kitts, and during his reign he successfully turned the city into a large port. De Poincy insisted on making Baseterre an important political and economic centre, and this is why he managed to make Basseterre the capital of the entire French West Indies colony. But don’t think that the city was always so successful and thriving; in fact, Basseterre is the city with one of the saddest history of all Caribbean capitals: it was burned, destroyed by wars, by earthquakes, riots or hurricanes. However, some of its architectural jewels still remain standing in the historical centre of the city.
