Brief History

The first settlers of Biarritz were the Vikings who conquered Gascony around 840 and since then decided to stay in the city because it has great whaling spots. Biarritz gained popularity during mid-1800s when the wife of Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie, built a palace on the beach, which later on became a vacation respite by the royal families. The Casino Bellevue and Casino Municipal were established in the 1900s which attracted more tourists to the city.
