Cancun is a popular holiday getaway in Mexico that is situated in Quintana Roo and on the northern tip of Yucatan peninsula. This famous seaside resort boasts of its fantastic weather being sunny all-year round but frequent rains can be expected between May to October. The best time to visit is from November to April when it is dry and warm.
Brief History
Cancun used to be a deserted island, but it was turned into a tourist zone when the Cancun Project began in 1970. The project was aimed to link the island to Puerto Juarez, build a residential and tourist zone and an international airport. The project was a huge success and greatly improved Quintana Roo's economy since 1989.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
There are lots of fun-filled festivals in Cancun but the most popular are the Cancun International Gay Festival in May which features beach parties, concerts and dance; and Dia de la Raza in October which consists of processions, bullfighting and street parties. If you are looking for a place where there are parties all-year round, then head down to the Tourist Zone where you can find numerous clubs and bars. Another popular area is the Laguna Nichupte which has an array of waterfront restaurants, shops, golf courses and other sporting facilities. Other must-see attractions include the Xcaret ecopark, Hidden Worlds Cenote Adventure Park and Wet'n'Wild.
Transportation
The most convenient mode of transportation in Cancun is the bus since there are lots of them in the island. Another alternative is by taxi and it is advisable to get them downtown where rates are cheaper.
