Great location, right by Grant Park and close to the Lake. Walking distance to Navy Pier. Couple of blocks from great shopping opportunities. Subway nearby if you don't preffer to walk.
Rate is low compared to other hotels nearby.
Ask for a 01 room, we had room 1501 with an amazing view fo the park and the lake! Rooms are clean and newly referbished.

Nice experience and nice value
Our priorities for our stay in Chicago were for the hotel to be downtown, as inexpensive as possible while still being clean. The Essex pretty much matched these expectations. My wife and I have received a nice weekend rate. The desk staff was courteous and the bellman was very friendly and helpful in directing us to public transportation. Our room was spotless and very spacious with a huge comfortable bed. The hotel is nicely located; it was nice to be close to the impressive Grant Park and the excitement and bustle of Michigan Ave. Also a good location to explore the museums and Navy Pier. We had a nice weekend stay at Chicago's Essex Inn and would definitely recommend.
