Location, Climate
Christchurch is a vibrant city in New Zealand's South Island. It lies within the Canterbury region and near the Banks Peninsula. Brief History
The first settlers in Christchurch were the Waitaha tribes who inhabited the area during the 13th century. These tribes hunt for moa, which is an extinct giant bird that can only be found in New Zealand. A war between the Waitahi tribes and the Ngati Namoe tribe occurred in Christchurch with the latter tribe winning the quest. The Ngai Tahu people defeated Ngati Namoe tribe and ruled Christchurch until the arrival of the first Europeans during the 1800s.

The busiest month in Christchurch is February because of the numerous events held during that time including the Edwardian Carnival, International Garden City Festival of Flowers and Romance, Jade Wine and Food Festival of Canterbury, and the New Zealand International Jazz and Blues Fest. The best place to start your sightseeing is at the Cathedral Square where you can find the Christchurch Cathedral. Other must-see attractions include the Town Hall, Victoria Square, Avon River, Bridge of Remembrance and New Brighton Pier.
Transportation
The city center is quite compact and pedestrianized which makes it easy to get around that area on foot. To reach other destinations, you can rent a car, ride a taxi or a bus.
