The Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise has carved a niche for itself in the expansive landscape of American theatre festivals. The festival began in 1977 when a group of determined actors put on A Midsummer Night's Dream at a local eatery.
The reception was overwhelmingly positive and they continued with their performances. In 1996, spurred on by increasing audiences and artistic demands, the festival initiated a campaign to build a permanent home.
