Como is just 45 km from the bustle of Milan and lies between the Lugano and the Bergamo Alps. The area is very popular with cyclists, walkers and swimmers looking for some tranquillity and breathtaking scenery. A frequent boat service connects the resorts that line the lake. Como is also renowned for its silk and since the 14th century it has produced much of the silk that you will find in Europe. There are many shops and factory outlets where you can buy silk. The area is also well known for its attractive villas that grace the lakeside, in particular the Villa Carlotta which was built in 1690.
