Awesome Venice reprieve! Isle of Lido was an ideal location to stay for ventures into Venice. The Hotel Des Baines had such beautiful grounds and was just across the street from the Adriatic. The shuttle that wisked you to the Westin for the complimentary ferry to Venice was right on time and incredibly convienent. I highly recomend a stay - it's quite and has old world charm. We stayed in mid-Oct 2003

The hotel des Bains is a perfect hotel for those looking for a fairly long (1-3 weeks) vacation in Venice. Its location on the island of Lido, about 30 minutes from Venice, is perfect. In the span of a two week vacation, it is not unusual for me to only go into Venice two or three times. With a beach, pool, and other activities available on Lido, the Hotel would be a great resort anywhere, but its location close to the most beautiful city on Earth multiplies the hotel's attractiveness.
The des Bains is about a 45 minute-1 hour boat ride from Marco Polo Airport. The hotel is connected to its sister hotel, the Excelsior, by a shuttle bus every half hour. The two hotels are less than a mile apart. From the Excelsior, hotel boats go into Venice about every half hour, connecting to three further sister hotels in Venice: The Gritti Palace Hotel, The Westin Europa & Regina, and the Danieli Hotel. The hotel's boats also shuttle to the airport, albeit for a fee.
Because of their proximity and relationship, the des Bains and Excelsior have often been unfairly compared. First of all, the Excelsior is a completely different atmosphere. The architecture is more modern, the hotel is larger, and, because of its proximity to the site of the annual Venice film festival, its guests tend to be more famous. On the other hand, the des Bains is a much nicer hotel for extended stays.
My family has been going to the hotel for more than forty years. Most of the other guests also come every year, so there is a general atmosphere of friendliness and acquaintance.
If one is looking for this sort of vacation spot, where friendships and traditions are built, to come back to for years to come, the Hotel des Bains is absolutely ideal.
The Hotel also boasts a fairly private beach, with cabannas, a pier, boat rentals and a bar/restaurant. On the Hotel grounds are a large pool in a beautiful setting, a large park, and tennis courts. There is also a bar/restaurant at the pool. Inside the hotel are two massive and beautifully decorated dining rooms, although dinner is usually served on the terrace. There is also a bar on the terrace.
About three times a year, between late July and Mid August, the Hotel holds poolside gala parties, with a buffet, a band, and themed entertainment. The Excelsior also holds such parties, which are also nice to go to because they sometimes include fireworks and celebrity performances. This year, for example, Nancy Sinatra sang at the Excelsior's August 15th party.
Rooms are well furnished, spacious yet comfortable, with TV, minibar, Phone, A/C, a view of either the park or the sea, and a marble bathroom. Most TV channels are in Italian, although there is also CNN International, CNBC, BBC, Sky News, a French Channel, a Spanish channel, and two German channels. I do not recommend watching TV, however, as it would be an utter waste of this beautiful hotel.
The staff is very kind and highly professional.
Within a two minute walk is Lido's shopping district, the Gran Viale, with many stores selling anything from Venetian glass to delicious candy. There is also a general supermarket, an arcade, and about five pleasant streetside Pizzarias, all very good. During the summer months, there is an outdoor concert on the Gran Viale every weekend.
During your stay at the des Bains, it would very much be worth going into Venice, either for daytime walks, shopping trips, or dinner at any of many excellent restaurants. The Danieli Hotel has a rooftop terrace restaurant overlooking the main waterfront, while the Europa and Gritti both have terraces situated directly on the Grand Canal. Other hotels and restaurants throughout Venice are definitely worth a visit, as are various museums, churches, bridges, canals, palaces, etc. Personally, I recommend simply walking through the small streets and alleys. You will see the real Venice, not the tourist version, and you'll do it for free. Gondola rides are overrated, and should only be done once in a lifetime, if at all. There is more to see on foot than on water. Most big attractions, such as the Basilica Cathedral, have amazingly long lines and are generally barely worth the wait. Some nice places to visit are the Academia, with a nice art exibit, Vivaldi's Cathedral, and the Ghetto, with beautifully decorated and ancient synagogues. In fact, the word "ghetto" originated in Venice.
All in all, I give the Hotel des Bains a top grade of 5-excellent, and recommend it particularly for families seeking a beautiful resort to return to for years to come.

We stayed in Des Bains, Venice in 2003 for 1 week of our honeymoon and had a fantastic time.
The hotel was excellent - very smart and the room was very comfortable and spacious. The grounds of the hotel were exquisite with private access to the nearby beach. The hotel is very old but certainly does not need any modernisation and was clean and very comfortable. It has a lot of character.
We have stayed in 4 - 5* hotels and this was definately in that league. A stay in Des Bains is a stay in luxury -truly unforgettable.
Venice Lido is nice and the hotel is just opposite the beach although there is not much selection with the nearby resturants. You can eat in one of the hotels two resturants but they are very expensive. Breakfast in the hotel was unforgettable and included champagne and fresh salmon if you wanted it.
As a resident of 'Des Bains' you can benefit from the free vaperetto daily to Venice in one of the neighbouring hotels. When visiting Venice itself we would recommend having coffee or a cocktail in the sister hotel 'Dannielli'. It is very very expensive but is definately worth a look - and you may spot the odd star.
On our last night we had a strange experience in our room (lights came on by themselves and wonder whether the hotel is haunted!! ) This just added to the thrill and we will definately go back to Des Bains and Venice again.

Just got back from Venice (my second trip there) and highly recommend staying at the Hotel Des Bains. It's a beautiful historic hotel with an enormous pool, wonderful grounds, great veranda to sit out on for drinks or dinner, a friendly and attentive staff., and an awesome breakfast buffet which is included in the rate. For the money, it is a much better place to stay than the Excelsior, which is a five minute drive down the road. This is the way to stay in Venice. The hotel provides a free shuttle to take you to the Excelsior where there are private hotel boats (again they are also free) that take you into St. Marks Square. (The whole trip is 20 min and is not at all inconvenient.) Having these private free boats is the only way to see Venice on the water, forget the public vaparettos!! Once you go into Venice and explore with all the crowds, you can take these private boats back to Lido (again, they run regularly throughout the day and night). Staying on Lido gives you the best of both worlds - you have the beach (right in front of Hotel Des Bains) and easy acccess to get into the heart of Venice which can be hectic, especially with the summer crowds. So if you want some relaxation but also want to explore Venice and be in the midst of all the action -you get both staying on Lido and this is the best place to be on Lido. The little town center in Lido is an easy 3 minute walk from the Hotel Des Bains and the hotel itself is elegant but also has a casual atmosphere. The only somewhat disappointing thing was that the beach charges you to rent cabanas, so it can be expensive. We did that for a day, and then decided to just hang out at the pool for free the rest of the time.
Having stayed in Venice (near St. Marks) where the rooms were small and the crowds ever-present, we will always go back to Lido and stay at this wonderful hotel to fully enjoy Venice and have some relaxation as well. (Also, the rooms were large, and very comfortable - had no problems with A/C, in fact, since the hotel is right on the ocean, we only used the A/C sometimes. At night, we opened the windows to hear the ocean, and get the cool breezes. It was heaven.)

I was suprised to see bad reviews of the lovely Des Bains Hotel. This is a beautiful historic property, with lush grounds, the best pool area in Venice, and wonderful service. I've stayed at many hotels in Venice (including the very luxurious Danieli) and really love this place. The rooms are large and many have seaviews. The common areas are old and charming. It feels miles away from the hords of tourist at Piazza San Marco. You can get into Venice easily via thier shuttle bus/ to private boat. It is very convenient. Or just stay on the Lido. This is great choice for people who have been to Venice Island before and want something different.

I have been reading reviews on the Hotel Des Bains for the past couple of months as I was due to visit this hotel in August. My in laws travelled with us and as I had made the booking I was concerned that the Hotel would be of a high standard. This Hotel did everything it said it would and more! Our rooms were beautiful, cool,i mmaculately clean and spacious. The facilities were perfect and the staff helpful and courteous. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and hope I get the chance to stay there again in the future.
