Brief History
Doha used to be a small village that traded pearls with the Japanese during the 19th century. Its livelihood had a downfall during the 20th century, but the discovery of oil saved the city's economy. The best place to start sightseeing is at The Corniche which gives excellent views of the city and the Arabian Gulf. Stroll along this beautiful promenade to see the Pearl Monument and the Emiri Diwan Palace. For a wonderful shopping experience, head down to Grand Hammad Street where you can find numerous souqs or shopping centers.

The most convenient way of getting around Doha is by riding the taxi, but make sure to look for green taxis since they are more honest than those who don't have a meter. Buses are cheaper and you can avail of daily, weekly and monthly passes.
