Egilsstadir is within easy reach of many of the leading attraction of East Iceland, such as the woods at Hallormsstadur and the Lagarfljot river; an ancient serpent is reputed to lie hidden at the bottom of the river, appearing occasionally at the surface.
At Midhus is a gallery that sells a variety of souvenirs, many made from horse hooves, reindeer and sheep horns, and from birch wood, grown in the Hallormsstadur woods. Organised tours are available to Mt. Snaefell (1,833 metres), and to the edge of Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier. |
