Hotel Edda Laugarbakki is located adjacent to the Midfjardara river in Midfjordur, midway between Reykjavik and Akureyri. Midfjardara is one of Iceland’s best salmon rivers. Laugarbakki is a village with a population of about 80. The hotel site was formerly known as Langafit; according to the Saga of Grettir, horsefights took place here in olden times.
Hot springs at Laugarbakki provide enough hot water to heat the community of Hvammstangi; the hot water is also used to heat greenhouses at Laugarbakki. The community has a sports hall, hot pots, camping site, community centre and food store. Angling licences for the lakes and rivers of Arnarvatnsheidi are sold at Laugarbakki.
Various places of interest are within an easy distance of Laugarbakki, such as Vatnsnes and Vatnsdalur, where remains of medieval buildings have been excavated at As.
Borgarvirki, a man-made fortification that dates back to the early years of Iceland’s history, is among the historic sites in the region. Natural features include the bizarre offshore rock formation Hvitserkur, and Kattarauga (Cat’s Eye), a deep pool in the Kornsa river, with two floating islands.
At Kirkjuhvammur in Midfjordur is a timber church dating from 1882, preserved in its original form and recently restored. |
