I stayed in the Emperador in June 04. Reception were friendly and helpful, room was above average and veery clean.
Situation was excellant for shopping, Prado etc - the Times Square of Madrid!
The roof top pool was fabulous - far exceeded expectations and enables you to have the best of both worlds - a city break and somewhere to top up your tan.
Only small down side was the breakfast was adequate - but boring.
Just a word of caution when out in Madrid - beware of organised crime - I had my bag snatched whilst in a small designer shop - so its not just out on the streets!

This hotel is very nice in a great location. My husband and I stayed here from April 22-26, 2004. We asked for a quiet room and received one in the back of the hotel. The room was small, but very clean and comfortable. The lobby in the hotel is huge and quite nice right on one of the main streets in Madrid (Gran Via). The staff is friendly and helpful. We didni't try their breakfast because it was very expensive. We walked a few doors down and ate in a cafe that was very reasonable. The location is superb! Everything seemed within walking distance. The metro was very close and easy to use. The internet was overpriced so we used the one down the street for .60 eruos per half hour. We loved the hotel and will definitely stay there again.

I had the good fortune of spending a weekend at The Emperador 02APR-04APR 2004 after not having stayed there for almost 20 years. It is absolutely one of the best hotels in the world if you consider location (EVERYTHING within easy walking distance) and price to what your money buys you. Sure, there are more modern, comfortable hotels in the world. There certainly are more quiet hotels, but NOT in ANY city centre of a major city. (I only heard ambulance and police sirens - you tell me in which 3million+ city centre you DON'T hear them). I have seen (and eaten) better buffet breafasts but what was served certainly kept me going for several hours. Maid service and clenliness are well above average and the reception staff rates even higer. And if you should go in summer you have the roof pool as frosting on the cake !! I envy you !!

Madrilenos are known for their hospitality but the staff of the Emperador was even friendlier than the norm. I felt very much at home there. Since the hotel is ideally situated for shopping, sightseeing and tapa hopping,I was able to walk almost everywhere. The rooms were large, clean and elegantly appointed. The only drawback was the breakfast which I had been told was part of my tour package but which cost me far more than it was worth. I recommend the Emperador and would stay there again anytime I'm in Madrid.
