Just visited this hotel for 4 days and 3 nights and it was fantastic. Really upmarket and in a great location, right next to the beach and very near the old town of Marbella which is extremely pretty with a lot of upmarket, designer shops. Puerta Banus is about a 10 minute taxi ride away. My sister and I had a fanastic time, the rooms are wonderful, and the staff are lovely too. The only criticsm would be the prices at the bar, which were extorionate. We visited the supermarket on the corner and took our drinks around the pool!! Still, I would go back in a heartbeat!

Older hotel with lots of charm. Rooms were a little worn looking, but the rest of the hotel & location are worth it. The lounge areas and courtyards are similar to tropical jungles with relaxing chaise lounges. Great breakfast buffet with wonderful selection of items and great food. The hotel opens through an exclusive gate to the central part of the boardwalk/beach. From the front of the hotel, you just cross the street and you're in the old part of Marbella with cobblestone streets, cafes, shops and the cathedral. A very lovely place to spend your time here.

The best hotel location-wise in Marbella, literally steps away from the beach on one side, and the whitewashed old town on the other.
It's not a brand-new hotel, but I didn't notice the wear and tear some of the others here described ... in fact, everything looked as if it were newly refurbished.
We had a full seaview room. Keep in mind that the ocean noise at night can be surprisingly loud ... I found it soothing, but light sleepers may find it annoying.
Breakfast buffet is excellent, one of the largest we've seen in Europe. It even included free all-you-can-drink champagne!
For those that like to go to bed early, remember that you are in Spain, and Southern Spain at that, in a hotel full of vacationing foreign tourists. The point here is that there is noise from the patio lounge/bar at the ground level that can be heard very loudly on the seaview side of the hotel from about 10pm to around midnight. Most nights it is the lounge singer crooning old show tunes and playing the piano, but on Tuesdays they have a flamenco show ... the stomping reverberates through the entire structure. We just popped open a bottle of wine on the balcony and enjoyed the flamenco dancers from above.
We did not have dinner at the restaurant, but prefered to wander over to the whitewashed old town, where all the local restaurants had their tables spread across the narrow cobblestone alleys. Very nice.
All service was excellent, front desk, concierge, bartenders, waitstaff, everything.
If you're looking for an isolated hideaway with a golf course, there are other options for you out there, but if you want to be in the heart of Marbella, this is the place!
When making your reservation (and telling the taxi driver which hotel to go to) make sure you know that this is the original El Fuerte hotel, the older one. El Fuerte is actually a chain, and they do have a couple of other properties in Marbella, such as the El Fuerte Miramar, etc. This one is just plain El Fuerte hotel.

We'd never been to Marbella so were confused about which hotel to pick, but the moment we arrived, we realized this hotel had everything we needed. The location is ideal, right on the beach and near the old town, where we loved to sit outdoors and have meals. And when you're there, don't pass up the churros and chocolate, which you can get in Old Town or on the beach promenade.
Our room, which had a partial ocean view, was lovely and we were thrilled by the clothes drying line on the patio. The hotel is large and comfortable, but isn't cold or commercial.
As for the pool area and beach chaises, they were terrific. You could bake in the sun or find an umbrella for shade. Towels are available at all hours and in September, we had no problem securing lounges. The beach is sandy, large and pleasant. There are many restaurants on the nearby promenade, making it an easy resort to enjoy, even without a car. This is particularly the place to stay if you don't have transportation.
