Galway used to be a small fishing village situated on the opening of a river and protected by a fort. The King of Connacht Turlough O' Connor built a fort on the mouth of River Corrib which became part of the Annals of the Four Masters. Most of the attractions in Galway can be reached on foot including Salthill, but those who prefer to not to walk can take the bus which departs from Eyre Square. There are also taxis available on Bridge Street and the bus/train station in Eyre Square.
