We stayed at the Gounod for 3 nights last August 2003 on our honeymoon after reading several positive reviews. Our room was very large, air conditioned, and clean. The decor was slightly dated, but the Gounod is definitely great value. The front desk was also quite helpful. The location was good - only a few blocks to the beach, shopping and promenade.

I stayed in the Grounod for three nights, based on the reviews I read here. I?‚ m pleased. FYI, I'm new to European travels so I have very little for comparison. I stayed in a single with a double bed during the start of Carnaval in mid-February. I agree with the previous reviews, a bit drab in spots, bathroom updated, centrally located, a safe area to walk at night. Also, breakfast was good with lots of fresh rolls, even eggs, staff helpful, room cleaned everyday. Sharing arrangement with the Splendid?‚ s pool is worth a look for the 360 roof top view. Besides being a bit drab in spots, the staff was a bit enthusiastic in promoting the restaurant at the Splendid, the Victor Hugo. I found plenty of good dining opportunities around with reasonable prices. I worked pretty hard to find the best rated hotel with the best price, and my research led me here and I?‚ m glad to find the reviews were accurate.

Just arrived home after 4 nights at the Gounod. The hotel is in a typical French style, a touch drab and dreary in places, but overall of a reasonable standard. Although facing a narrow internal courtyard so we had no view whatsoever, our room was absolutely massive, with built-in wardrobes, a bathroom and a separate shower room. The room was clean and comfortable, with a very good double bed, a couple of armchairs and a table, nice colour TV with satellite and pay films. The room was cleaned daily, together with fresh towels and bed linen.
Breakfast was buffet style, served in a room off reception, and was of comparitively good quality. Service was attentive at all times, and we were generally made to feel welcome. Car parking costs 12E per day, although we managed to find spaces on the road each evening. The hotel is situated in a fairly nice area, within 15 mins walk of the main shopping area, and a few mins drive to the seafront and express road.
Having previously stayed at the 4* Acropole in Nice, the Gounod is superb in comparison. As long as you dont expect standard "Holiday Inn" style accommodation, the Gounod does represent good value for money.

Perfectly happy with this property. Location is just a few blocks from the beach, just as the streets become quiet and peaceful. You can walk easily to / from the Nice train station, shopping mall, restaurants and beach. We stayed in a larger room with only an ally view, but most rooms are smaller (typical) with nice views out onto the street. Staff was very helpful in handling and delivering our lost luggage. We would stay here again.

Stayed at the Gounod for 4 nights mid-June 2004 based on the Frommer's book . I booked a suite for 4 people. We had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (no kitchen). The rooms were spacious and nicely decorated. More then 3 nights included the breakfast which actually offered eggs and sausage besides the customary croissants. The hotel is inbetween the beach and the train station. I would stay there again--unless I upgraded to a beach front hotel.

We spent four days in Nice at the beginning of June and enjoyed it very much. We booked the Hotel Gounod after reading the reviews on this site. The hotel was fine, and as other reviewers have mentioned, the rooms are large (well, ours was anyway). Two wardrobes and loads of space, unlike those business hotels which have just enough room for an overnight bag.
Breakfast was fairly basic, but OK, and they knew how to make a pot of tea!
My only complaint would be that there was no shower curtain, so if you showered standing up, everything in the bathroom got wet. I tried various contortions to avoid this, but the only way to use the shower without any water splashing onto the floor was to squat down in the bath. Think of Gollum in Lord of the Rings and you'll get the picture...
We used the rooftop swimming pool at the Hotel Splendid, which was great - jacuzzi too! You just walk into the lobby there and go up in the lift.
From looking around, I'd say that the Hotel Splendid is a much more modern hotel, with better facilities, but you'd probably pay around ?40 - ?50 per night more, so that's not really a fair comparison.
The Gounod is about 5 minutes walk from the best part of the seafront, and about the same distance from the main train station, so it is ideally situated.
I'd recommend it - but check if your bathroom has a shower curtain first!

We stayed here June 2004 . The beds were extremely comfortable, nice bathrooms and gorgeous balconies you could go out and sit (there was a table and chair) The best part was when we came back from sightseeing there was real cool air conditioning. Alot of the hotels in france have a fan or ventilator that they called air cond.
THis was close to the beach and also close to the train station for us to walk to our next destination. Didnt need to take a cab the location was great.

Stayed at the Hotel Gounod three nights in early June, we had one of the big four person suites, the bathroom was so amazing I had to take pictures, very pretty and huge. Very comfortable, two separate bedrooms, we didn't use the kitchenette but it was there. Didn't take advantage of the pool etc. at the sister Splendid Hotel. Is just a few blocks from the sea and four blocks from the train station, and its downhill so easy walk on arrival. Buy your cheap plastic jelly type sandals at the shop along Gounod on your way to the beach. Tip: The desk will give you a coupon so you can pay to use the private beach, the payment doesn't include towels, so bring yours from the hotel or pay 5 euro per towel. Payment does include the chairs, umbrellas and use of the shower/toilet facilities. You will need shoes due to the rocky beach. Breakfast is more substantial than most, included scrambled eggs/bacon.

We stayed at this hotel in March of 2004 and loved it. The staff was gracious and very helpful. This was one of the few places in Europe where the restaurant suggestions from the staff were perfect. The hotel was only a few blocks from the beach and we also enjoyed the pool privledges at the sister hotel next door. Also, when we left to catch our train and realized due to 9/11 that there was no luggage storage at the train station, the staff at the hotel was helpful enough to keep our luggage the day we checked out so we could continue to enjoy Nice.
