Work in Progress
This is a Grand Hotel in most ways and we enjoyed our stay. Location was good. If catching a coach from airport (6 Euros 10 cents) get off at second stop (I think Politeama) rather than at Central Station as it a much shorter walk.
It was warm then we went but the air conditioning in the hotel rooms is not turned on in April!!!! The street outside is noisy - car horns - car alarms - sirens - loud scooters buses lorries etc etc so having the balcony doors open was a compromise between too hot and too noisy. Otherwise room was good.
The hotel was being refurbished in places resulting in a slightly complicated route to the room but there are no building noises or other distractions.
The staff are ok but do not expect amazing service. Some Americans were met in the hotel were refugees from the Wagner as they felt out hotel was more friendly!
The history of the hotel was gleaned from the tourbus commentary (20 euros a person expensive but overall worthwhile) and increased by the typed notes in the lifts. The notes have some very strange and amusing translations in them) The hotel was built by an Englishman and became a centre for political intrigue and dealings in the 19th Century. This tradition is continued by the fact that every day a political meeting took place in the hotel! This resulted in police outside the hotel in significant numbers on the Sunday and Thursday and a peaceful protest opposite on one day. The desk clerks were utterly disinterested in these goings on and gave no information whatsoever about them.
The food is generally good but the staff are under pressure at times - they ran out of cutlery over breakfast one morning and really struggled to keep the self service tables topped up with items.
Drinks in the hotel are not cheap but not outrageous. Though the cost of the wifi is 13 euros a day!
The hotel is living in the past - it attracts eccentrics and characters. One of the older lady residents came down in a different formal hat for breakfast each day.
It is a four star hotel just - Its grandness makes even large statues seem disproportionally small - After the second day we started noticing large objects appearing and disappearing. Grand pianos and sofas and statues would come and go silently and mysteriously. One day there were three pianos in one of the ante rooms for no obvious reason. The pictures that adorn the walls of the corridors and bedrooms etc are very very repetitive - We started looking for duplicates as walking along - not a hard task.
Overall it was a good hotel to stay in which with its history and eccentricity makes it worth 4 stars
