Brief History

Prior to the arrival of the European settlers, the area was inhabited by the Maori people; the main Maori villages were Pukete, Kirikiriroa, and Miropiko. The British settlers were the first to arrive in the region in 1863; however, missionaries had been here since 1830. In 1868 Hamilton’s population was 300 and this was partly due to the poor quality of the land. Hamilton used to be two separate cities, Hamilton East and Hamilton West, being divided by the Waikato River; the two united in 1877. Nowadays the city has a large student population, which makes it a vibrant place to be.
