My wife and I stayed at this Hotel in July 2003, and I have to say that this was the most pleasant hotel experience I have ever had. Most hotels greet you by swiping your credit card and mindlessly asking "how was your stay?" while quickly checking you out. Hotel Dei Mellini enhanced our time in Rome with their high level of SERVICE.
We were initially drawn to the hotel after reading online that Ridley Scott held casting for "Hannibal" at the hotel, but a little hesistant after reading one guest's problems with in-room theft. My wife found a great deal online, so we gave it a shot and we're glad we did.
As I said, the service was fantastic. When we arrived, the ultra-polite desk clerk arranged for a tour of "Illuminated Rome" that picked us up right at the hotel. Later that night, when we asked at the small-but-elegant hotel bar if they had any food (since most restaurants in the area were closed due to the late hour) Fabio (the best bartender I've ever met) went into the kitchen and whipped us up a plate of some of the best food we had in our 2 weeks in Italy- a sampler of cheeses, breads, salads and pastas. The attention to detail was incredible; even a garden variety "Coke" served by this bartender was something special. A carefully presented frosted baloon glass with just the right amount of ice and a wedge of lemon for a COKE!?
Increidble.
The next day when the larger group we were travelling with joined us in Rome, we HAD to introduce them to Fabio. And he again treated the entire group to excellent service above and beyond what I'm accustomed to in the US.
When it came time to leave, we asked the desk clerk "What's the best way to get to the Airport?" That's all it took- and she arranged for a Mercedes E Class to pick us up and deliver us to the airport without fear of getting "ripped off" or worse-lost in the process of taking a cab to the train station en route to the airport (what a mess).
Believe me, we've never experienced service like this any time before or since at any hotel. Just last weekend at a 5 star hotel in New York City we experience just the opposite, which is what reminded me to write a positive review of this gem of a Hotel in Rome. Truly outstanding!

On our arrival, my partner was ill and required a hotel doctor.
Unfortunately, he had to stay in bed for first 3 days. Hotel could not have been more helpful in rearranging our trip details, extending our stay at a special rate and helping in any way possible. We even decided to return back to Rome near the end for another couple of days with them. Very nice, quiet small hotel in a great location. Well recommended.

Well placed hotel near the Vatican and within easy walking distance of the historic sights. Nice sized rooms and good bathrooms. Excellent bars and restaurants close by. Will definitely stay here again!

We really enjoyed our four day stay in March 2004. Loved the relaxing atmosphere, the impeccable service, especially from the bar tender, and the extra little touches which made our stay there special. Our room on the top floor was spacious, spotless and very comfortable. Perfectly located on a quiet street within easy reach of the sights.

My family and I just returned from 8 glorious days in Rome where we stayed at the Dei Mellini. I can't say enough of our experience at the hotel. The rooms are beautiful, spacious( we had the deluxe double rooms) with well appointed modern bathrooms( great water pressure!).
All the staff, from the porters, to the front desk to the breakfast room staff were excellent, happy to help and accomodate our requests.
But among the staff one member excelled. It was their bartender( although he also serves as cook of a limited menu and waiter in the evenings), Fabio! The day we arrived in Rome my mother came down with an eye ailment that put her in bed with pain. When Fabio came with the room service, he took a personal interest in asking what the problem was and assisted us with the name and address of a clinic that specializes in opthalmology. He even called the clinic to make sure they were open and offered to drive us after his shift was over!
Afterwards he was always so warm and caring , making sure to enquire how my mother was doing! He always steered us to the nicest wines we sampled in Italy and his service was always delivered with a smile.
The location of the hotel is great: less than 10 mins. walking to Piazza de Spagna, Piazza Navona and 15-20 mins. walking to the Vatican.
Because it is not on a main street you hear very little traffic( my room faced the front of the hotel). We got a very good rate( lower than in their website) by e-mailing directly the hotel.

We stayed for several days at the end of August and are very happy that we chose this hotel. Staff were really nice, kind and attentive. Rooms are elegant and comfortable, bathroom very well equipped (a bit on the small side though). We stayed first for 2 nights and room was ok, then went away and came back for 4 more nights and then we were given a much larger room, really spacious and comfortable, with a king size bed.
Breakfast buffet was very good. Also location is great, in a quiet (but safe - with the Carabinieri on the same street) area but within walking distance of the main sights - about 15-20 min. to Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Navona (also there is a bus stop very close to the hotel). I would definitely recommend this hotel, and would be quite happy to go back anytime.

Just spent the long Labor Day weekend at the Hotel Dei Mellini in Rome... what a wonderful surprise! Lovely staff, beautiful room, yummy breakfast... all w/in easy walking distance to all of the best in Rome. The front desk's restaurant recommendations were superb: Ciro for the best pizza my husband and I have EVER had, and Gusto/Osterria for a more formal dinner. Each were English-speaker friendly, but not packed w/obnoxious tourists. Nearby Vito's Pub and Wine Bar served as our nightly haunt before retiring to the comfy bed in our elegantly appointed, high-ceilinged hotel room. Thanks to the Dei Mellini for a truly memorable Roman experience...!
NOTE: do NOT use the MapQuest link to locate this hotel, as it shows the Dei Mellini on the OTHER side of the Tiber... a very frustrating revelation after an hour + of fruitless search with bags in tow. The good news: cab stands appear readily available near every obelisk!

We (2 adults & 2 children) stayed there 1st week of Aug 04. They didn't have a quad room & accomodated us in 2 rooms. One quite large & the other reasonable. Got good rates through their web site. Nice decor befitting a 4 star. Disappointed that they did not have high speed Internet access. It was nice that breakfast closed late at 11am. A toaster would have been nice. Location - fairly central, though we took a lot of taxis as it was very hot. Restaurants and deli nearby. Friendly staff.

Great room and lobby. Best breakfast we had in Italy. The service was very good and the staff accomodating. Very good value for the money.
Only hesitation is the location which while not far from most tourist sites is not really in the center of any of the places you will likely spend time.

My wife and I had a great weeks holiday here in July. The Mellini really is top notch in terms of service, cleanliness, decoration, style, food and location. The only downside we experienced was the size of our room - it was tiny! I think the present owners aquired the building and upgraded it and they have done so to an exceptional standard, but the one thing they could not upgrade was the size of many of the rooms. Some other reviewers seem to have got sizeable rooms, so make sure you know what you are getting before you book.
The Mellini is really close to all the main sites and the main restaurant and cafe locations, but I would recommend that you do not neglect the deli in the same street (which does fantastic non-touristy lunches and sells great prossuco for 4 euros a bottle) nor the cafe/bar across the road from the end of the street as it stay open late and does great cocktails.
The other thing not to miss is the rooftop sun-deck as it is the best way to spend an afternoon after a mornings exploring. As well as tables and chairs it also has recliners and even a shower to cool off. Bliss.
Enjoy!
