Brief History

The name of the peninsula was taken from the Illyria tribe called “Histri”, which have lived in the region according to Greek historian Strabo. The Romans took two military attacks against the Histri before they finally defeated them around 177 BCE. The area was called “Venetia et Histria” during the Roman times.

If you are into indie films, then make sure to attend the Motovun Film Festival in Istria. This annual film fest is held usually in July or August and showcases independent films and short documentaries.
