Johor Bahru was founded in 1855, and prior to this it was but a small fishing village called Tanjung Puteri. After 1855 the city saw rapid expansion, and that was the era when the city’s most important landmarks were erected. During the two world wars the city became a hot spot for Malaysian nationalism. Then, starting with the 1960s, the city started to grow and expand as new townships were built. But it wasn’t until 1995 that JB was officially recognized as a city.
