Location, Climate
Kandy is one of the largest cities in Sri Lanka. Its location in a high elevation in the Central Province makes its temperature cooler and wetter than other nearby cities with the same tropical climate. Avoid making cheap hotel reservations from May to July and December to January when the weather is unstable and rough. It is best to book cheap hotels between December and April which is its dry season. Check out the top deals in Kandy hotels online.
Brief History
Vikramabahu III of the Kingdom of Gampola founded the city and named it Senkadagalapura. The first king of Kandy was Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu who made the city Kandyan Kingdom's new capital. Sena was succeeded by his son, King Jayaweera Astana, but was soon taken over by King Karaliyadde Bandara and later on his daughter named Dona Catherina.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
Witness the most extravagant event in Kandy by attending Esala Perahera which is usually held in July or August. This Buddhist festival features elegant costumes, decorated elephants, Kandian dances, Diya Kepeema, and other cultural activities. The most notable landmark in Kandy is the Temple of the Tooth which houses Lord Buddha's tooth. Continue your spiritual journey by visiting the Bahirawakanda Temple and the Gadaladeniya Temple. Other must-see attractions include the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage, Royal Botanical Garden and New Ranweli Spice Garden.
Transportation
Almost everything at the city center is accessible on foot. If you prefer not to walk, you can ride the “tuk-tuk” (three-wheeler). The tuk-tuks are cheap, easy to find and operate all night.
