Location, Climate
Krabi is a market town in southern Thailand that also serves as the perfect base to explore nearby tourist destinations such as Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Railay and Ao Nang. Brief History
Traces of human existence in Krabi dates back around 25,000 to 35,000 BC but historians believed that human civilization began during 1200 BC from the Kingdom of Ligor. Krabi was governed by Nakhon Si Thammarat until 1872 and became part of Bangkok in 1875.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
One of the most-celebrated events in Krabi is the Loi Ruea Chao Le Festival (Floating Boats of the Sea Gypsy) which is held every May and October. Sea gypsies gather to the beach to set boats afloat in the sea followed by traditional music and dance during this festival. There are many magnificent natural attractions in Krabi but the most prominent are the Khao Khanab Nam Mountains which features a sacred cave. Other must-see sites include the Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple), Shell Cemetery and Houy Toe Waterfall.
Transportation
Riding motorcycle taxis or even driving one in Krabi is too risky because there are many reckless drivers in town. It is best to take the open-air buses (converted trucks) when getting around town since they are cheaper and safer. River taxis (long-tail boats) can take you to different islands and even serve as a tour guide for an additional fee.
