Brief History
The first settlers in Kyrenia were the Greeks who occupied the northern coast of Cyprus where the city now stands. The Greeks built their defenses and town before the Romans arrived in Kyrenia and established the city. The Arabs invaded Kyrenia during the 7th century causing damage to the castle.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
Experience real Kyrenian tradition by attending the Kyrenia International Olive Festival which is held every month of October. This annual event features Turkish and Cypriot dances, colorful costumes, street parades, international flags and banquets. The perfect place to unwind is at the Harbour's promenade which is lined with restaurants, cafes and bars. The most notable landmark in the city is the Kyrenia Castle which houses the Shipwreck Museum. Other must-see attractions include the St. Hilarion's Castle, St Andrews Church, Baldoken Graveyard, Fresco Museum and Museum of Decorative Arts.
Transportation
Buses are not that reliable in Kyrenia that's why many tourists prefer renting a car, 4WD, moped or scooter. Some prefer riding the bicycle because of the excellent cycle trails in the city. Taxis are accessible and perfect for short trips. There are also regular boats and ferries at the New Harbour.
