Brief History

In the Luwian language, an Anatolian language, the word “Lara” means sand; therefore, the city’s name is representative for its long beach. Lara’s history is closely connected to that of Antalya. It is believed that Antalya was founded at around 150BC by king Attalos, thus the city’s name. Antalya was a Roman Republic and then a major city within the Byzantine Empire. It was conquered by the Seljuk Turks in the 13th century. In the 17th century the city was already prosperous, having outgrown its initial walls. It is said that at that time the city’s harbor could host as many as 200 boats, and had approximately 3,000 houses. Antalya shifted from a pastoral village to one of the busiest and largest metropolitan areas in Turkey due to tourism, which boomed in the 21st century.
