Manila was ruled by different empires and the name of the city was derived from the Filipino words “may nila” which means “there is a nila tree”. The first European to explore the Philippines was Ferdinand Magellan who arrived in the island during the 16th century.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
The month of June keeps on sizzling in Manila because of its hot events including Manila Day which features concerts, talent contest and food festival; and the Fete de la Musique which showcases more than 150 musicians performing in various genre-themed stages. The most touristic area in Manila is Intramuros where you can see the Manila Cathedral, St. Augustine Church and Fort Santiago. If you want to relax, then head to Rizal Park where you can see the monument of Jose Rizal and dancing fountains. A stroll along Roxas Boulevard offers you breathtaking views of the Manila Bay.
Transportation
The jeepneys and buses dominate the streets of Manila, but traffic can slow you down. The LRT and MRT are faster but make sure to avail of stored value tickets to save up and avoid the long queue. Pedicabs and tricycles are for short-distance travels while the horse-drawn carriage and boat cruises are perfect for sightseeing.
