Location, Climate

The capital of the Bahamas is Nassau. It is situated in the New Providence island and features a tropical wet climate. The temperature in Nassau is fairly mild all-year round, but watch out for monsoon rains between May and October. Brief History

Nassau was originally called Charles Town, but it was destroyed by the Spaniards in 1684. The town was rebuilt in 1695 and the name was changed to Nassau in honor of Stadtholder William III of England. French and Spanish allied forced raided Nassau and temporarily settled in the area in 1703.

Events, Landmarks, Activities

Nassau hosts several festivals annually, but the most celebrated is the Junkanoo which is held on December 26 and also January 1. Witness a colorful parade of people wearing costumes and dancing to music accompanied by whistles, cowbells and drums. The best place to start sightseeing in Nassau is at the Old Town where you can find the Parliament Building and beautiful Caribbean structures. Head on top of Fort Fincastle to enjoy breathtaking views of the city. Catch the adorable flamingo show at the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conversation Center.

Transportation

Downtown Nassau is easy to navigate on foot. There are “jitneys” (minibuses) that travels all over the city and the island just make sure to find one that goes to your chosen destination. The only way to reach Paradise Island is by riding a water taxi.
