The Schiller isn't glamorous, but comfortable with efficient and friendly service. We stayed for 4 nights in late July 2004. We arrived early planning to drop off our luggage and come back later for check-in, but were offered the opportunity to check-in straight away on the basis that we could pick up our room key later when they had sorted out a room for us. While we were doing that, the Receptionist dealt single-handedly with a large-number of check-outs and calls (including some difficult customers) with good humour and without delay and still managed to find us an available room so that we were in fact able to be in the room an hour and a half earlier than expected. And a nice room too! Though blandly decorated in typical hotel-style, it was comfortable, large, airy and spacious. The bathroom was tiny, but adequate and spotlessly clean with a decent shower (often a rarity in even the best hotels!).
When we stayed it was very hot and rooms at the front of the hotel are shadier (we did overhear another couple asking to be moved from the back as there is no air-con and their room was too hot). I would recommend you ask for a room on the upper floors if you are sensitve to noise. The area is tranquil during the day, but lively at night with an excellent choice of bars and restaurants. I can't say it wasn't noisy, but on the 4th floor we managed to sleep with all the windows wide open so it wasn't that bad.

I had been told not to expect the Dutch to be overly friendly, like I am accustomed to here in the Southern States. So, when I arrived at the Schiller, I was more than surprised by the friendly service. We felt out of place coming in--the lobby is BREATHTAKING and I am a simple gal--but the staff really made us feel welcome, even letting us check in 2 hours early after an overnight (sleepless) flight.
This hotel was PERFECT for our needs--centrally located so we could walk everywhere, priced right, again they have a SUPER NICE staff--the doorman even held the door for us after a long night of partying...we looked like street urchins coming in from the rainy October night, especially compared to the lobby which is full of artworks, gold leaf detailing, and extravagant ornamentation.
Our room overlooked the street, and the Park--so beautiful! Absolutely charming place...it was hard to leave. We're going back after only a year away--this time for two weeks instead of only a few days.
Not particularly large rooms, but if you're spending enough time in your room to notice, you aren't spending enough time in Amsterdam! Bathroom was nice, TV, coffee in my room, BATHROBES and SLIPPERS...cannot complain about a thing! Very clean and well-kept establishment.
Thanks to them for 'home away from home!'

It was our first visit to Amsterdam and we were glad we stayed at the NH Schiller. Our flight got in early morning local time and we went to the hotel expecting to just drop off our luggage and come back in the afternoon to check-in but they gave us our room right away....at 8:30 am! It was a lovely room on the top floor, hence, weren't too bothered by the little noise emanating from the hustle and bustle below. The room (approx. 180 sqft) and the bathroom were clean and relatively spacious, which was a nice surprise especially after reading review after review complaining about tiny European hotel rooms. The best part was that it was one of the few rooms having windows on opposite walls which made the room seem bigger than it was and gave us great views of the Rembrandtplein from one side and the city from the other. While we didn't get a great bargain on the room rate, we did feel that the money was extremely well spent.
The location is really what made the stay a memorable experience. The hotel overlooks the Rembrandtplein which is packed with bars & restaurants and is a short (20 min) walk from the heart of the Centrum. In fact, almost all the major tourist attractions are accessible by foot in under 30 minutes....and, if the weather is nice, you WILL want to walk around in Amsterdam. It is indeed an ideal base for first-time travellers who want to explore the beauty of Amsterdam. We absolutely enjoyed our stay there!

Stayed here last year and I've booked a return trip. The Rooms are ok for a four star hotel but the bathrooms are good by any standard. The place is well kept and the staff are very friendly. There is a good restaurant/bar and breakfast was worth the cost. However the best thing about this hotel is the location. Rembrandt Square is full of bars and cafes and pretty much in the centre of the old city, a lot of fun (try and get a room over the square - but high up so you don't get too much noise.
