October short break
We have just returned from our 3 night stay at the Novotel Victoria St in Bristol (Oct 16-19 2006) where my wife and I had a most enjoyable stay. We booked at a discounted rate via otel.com. Check in was efficient and check-in staff very helpful. Parking in the hotel’s own car park situated under the hotel, and there is a lift direct from the car park up into the hotel. Our room was on the top floor - floor 4 - and at the front of the hotel overlooking Victoria St. The room was a double room but quite large and I would say fairly recently updated decor and furniture wise. Bed: 5 foot, very comfortable. Large sofa bed (would seat 3-4). 20in LCD TV with some satellite foreign language channels and a facility to play your own mp3 player via the TV. No wireless internet access was found, although if you have your own laptop you can hook up to the internet via the RJ45 LAN cable provided - only thing is they charge £5 for 1 hour access or £10 for 24 hours - and that’s 1 or 24 hours elapsed starting from when you 1st connect. This (imho) overcharging was a shame, ideally it should be free (after all what does it cost the hotel?) or failing that something more reasonable like £3 for 24 hours. Bathroom was bath with shower over. Nicely decorated and clean, only thing is the shower's water flow was a little feeble - but adequate (but I was forewarned about this by the previous tripadvisor reviewers). Room has small fridge with (usual) over priced drinks and snacks (eg £2 for a Kit-Kat) but there’s room in it for some of your own stuff if you choose like we did to buy the same stuff from the convenience store 1 mins walk across Victoria Street. Breakfast was excellent on all 3 days, with very good choice of cereals, breakfast fruits, yoghurts, croissants, pastries, toast, and all the English cooked breakfast items (well plenty anyway). All self service eats as much as you like basis. Pleasant and efficient restaurant staff. Free Independent newspaper available for the taking and on most days the local daily Metro newspaper as well. Parking is chargeable, at £5 a day (or less for part of a day), you take a ticket on car park entry and get reception to validate it just before you leave with you car. It doesn’t matter how many times you come and go with your car - they will not charge you more than £5 a day. That's not such a bad deal as alternative parking isn't easy to find in this part of Bristol. Never had a problem finding a space. Other stuff: We did try room service, food was good, service good (20 mins they said and 20 mins it was) and reasonable priced (no tray charge). Bills - can see your running bill on the TV screen in your room. AirCon/Heating in room - individual control worked well. Noise: occasional sirens (fire engines mostly - fire station is in the next street) and occasional room doors banging, other wise fine, and certainly not a problem. Overall: Very Good, would definitely stay here again. Great location. What could be better: 1. free or reasonable internet access 2. more power in the shower.
