Recommended!
I've recently stayed at Old Waverley Hotel and it was a very nice stay. The hotel is nestled in a historical Scottish building where the tradition meets modern amenities. The hotel is located in Edinburgh's West End on the Princes Street where one can find lots of shops, cafe and bars. The hotel is a stroll away from Waverley Station which makes it easy to explore the other parts of the city. The room i stayed in was a big room with carpetted floor. The bathroom was nice with a bath and toiletries. I dined at Cranston's Restaurant at the hotel which serves beautifully presented, delicious meals. The hotel bar serves a wide range of drinks and cocktails in a relaxing atmosphere. Old Waverley Hotel is the right place to stay in Edinburgh. Recommended!

We have just returned from staying at the Old Waverley. We had a wonderful room overlooking Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle. It was immaculate and very comfortable. The staff on the reception desk and in the restaurant were more than helpful and helped to make our stay there even more enjoyable. The room had secondary glazing which meant there was little noise. The parking is a problem but this is a common factor with any hotel on Princes Street. I would certainly have no hesitation in going back there. A wonderful break in a very comfortable hotel!

Visited The Old Waverely in March 2004 and found the staff very helpful and friendly. Cosy rooms and a great Scottish Breakfast. Views from the restaurant suberb and hotel central for almost everything. Parking is always a problem in Edinburgh but there is a discount of 50% from standard rates at the Waverely Station Car park. Found it relatively easy to park near the hotel by meter and it gave enough time to get luggage into reception before locating the car park. Would definitely come back. John Clark Dumfries

Best bits? Views over Princes Street and very friendly staff. Worst bits? Street noise and no adjacent parking.
I stayed on the 3rd floor. I chose the hotel for the views and they were worth it, but the windows were old and single-glazed. This meant that street noise was a real problem (especially early-morning carousellers!) plus the first night was cold - previous user had turned the heating to minimum, not a good idea with thin windows! Parents note - the windows could be easily opened upwards, allowing you (or kids) to stick your head out.
The parking is a good 10 minute walk away. Ok for a single suitcase, but a real pain for those with baggage that requires 2 or more trips.
Bring parking ticket back to hotel (i.e. don't leave in car) for discount.
Although a porter helped lug my case onto the street when I was leaving, on my arrival I had to lug it upstairs to the reception. Again a problem for those with lots of luggage, as you can't park at all in the street outside. There is a lift (tatty) from reception to all upper floors.
The restuarant was fine for breakfast, but despite the views, the bar and lounge areas were dull and quiet and not very inviting for the single guest. There was a party of tourists in there on night one and they seemed to find it "cosy", and the prices aren't too expensive.
Bedroom and bathroom were fine and there is a very nice selection of artwork in the corridors. TV was basic non-digital, there is an ironing service available, and also a trouser press in the room. The central location means that lots of bars, restuarants, theatres and cinemas are within easy walking distance.

OW is an excellent hotel. We stayed there 6 nights in July 2004. The breakfast was great; we have never had a better one in any hotel (bacon, mushrooms, tomato, beans, haggis, potato, toast, marmalades, honey, coffee or tea). The lounge was great: we ate one evening nachos, which was an excellent snack (there's also available dinner every evening). The room was in the third floor and the view was to the Princes Street and Scott Monument. The room was large and clean and had also a possibility to make coffee yourself. The floor was made of tartan. ??Š There was also a supermarket and pubs right behind the corner.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable visit to Edinburgh. The Old Waverley made the stay all the more pleasant. The room provided marvellous views of the castle and the park opposite and was also clean and comfortable. We had no problem with noise because all the windows had secondary glazing. The hotel staff were friendly and extremely helpful. The full scottish breakfast was a feast and more than enough to satisfy the biggest appetite. We were able to watch the Edinburgh marathon from the first floor dining room while we drank our coffee! A notice at the entrance suggests that anyone who can't negotiate two very small flights of stairs, rings the bell provided for assistance. The lift to all floors was adequate for the size of the hotel and there never seemed to be any long delays when using it. Luggage can also be left at the hotel after checking out if you want to extend your site-seeing. Parking, as with all hotels on this busy street, can be awkward but a secure car park at a discounted rate is not too far away. A fine, old, city-centre hotel. Good value and well worth a visit.
