Location, Climate
Palm Springs is the favorite destination of movie stars, naturists and gays traveling to California. It is situated in the Riverside County near Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego. Palm Springs is sheltered by several mountain ranges giving it warm and dry climate. Brief History
The Cahuilla first inhabited Palm Springs around 350 to 500 years ago and named it “Se-Khi” which means “boiling water”. During the 19th century, the Spanish explorers renamed it to “Agua Caliente” which means “hot water”.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
Movie fans should definitely attend the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January, Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films in June and the Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in September. The downtown area always gets packed with tourists especially along Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive because of it has some of the best restaurants, galleries and shops. A treat for art lovers is the Palm Springs Art Museum which houses the Annenberg Theatre. If you want to splurge, then head down to El Paseo where you can choose from more than 300 upscale boutiques, jewelers and fine restaurants.
Transportation
The downtown area is pedestrianized which makes it a great place to walk around. Riding a bicycle is also a good idea since the city is flat and dry. Renting a car with or without a driver is the best option when touring farther destinations.
