Phuket is a famous tourist destination in Thailand and also the largest island in the country having same dimension as Singapore. The first inhabitants of Phuket were the Ban Chiang tribes which was said to have stayed in the island from the 5th century B.C. to 3rd century A.D. The Europeans started to invade Phuket during the 16th century because of its trade industry. The most important era in Phuket is when Thao Thep Kasatri and Thao Sri Sunthon fought the Burmese and prevailed in 1785.

There are several festivals and events held in Phuket each year but the most-awaited is Chinese New Year or also called Spring Festival Week which is held for weeks featuring ceremonies, processions, firework displays, great music and food. There are lots of things you can do in Phuket like swimming and surfing, elephant trekking, spiritual quest and shopping. The most notable religious structure in the city is the Big Buddha which sits between Kata Beach and Chalong Bay. Those who want to party and have fun should check out the scene at Bangla Road. A trip to Phuket won't be complete without visiting its beaches including Patong Beach.
The cheapest way to get around Phuket is by motorbike taxi but for farther destinations, it is best to take the bus. For better comfort, take the metered taxis which also have air-conditioning.
