Location, Climate
Playa del Carmen is a great alternative to those who are planning to visit Cancun. It lies within Mexico's Quintana Roo and near Cancun and Cozumel. Playa features a subtropical climate with weather ranging from hot to cool. Make hotel reservations between November and January to experience a cool climate. Most cheap hotels get packed during Spring Break and Easter weekend so make sure to book a cheap hotel in advance to avail of the best hotel deals.
Brief History
The name of the city was taken from the patron saint of Cancun, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Mount Carmel is the Italian town where the chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary can be found. Playa received its first visitors around 300 to 600 AD and the Mayans called the place Xaman-Ha which means “waters of the north”.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
Get ready to dance samba, listen to live music and enjoy great food during the Brazilian Day in Playa which is held every October. Playa boasts of its gorgeous beaches which are perfect for snorkeling, diving and swimming. The more adventurous would surely enjoy exploring the Mayan ruins located along the Yucatan peninsula. The hottest spot in town is the 5th Avenue (La Quintana) where you can find an array of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops.
Transportation
Playa is quite small which makes anything easy to reach on foot. If the weather gets too hot or it is rainy, you can ride a taxi and the rates are affordable. If you want to save up, you can wait for the “colectivos” (12-seater van).
