We stayed at the Hotel Rialto at the end of April 2004 and had a room overlooking the Grand Canal. We absolutely loved the view and the staff were all very friendly. We were slightly concerned about speaking no Italian but all the staff spoke very good English, as did most people in cafes/restaurants/etc in Venice. We flew to Marco Polo airport and picked up a bus from right outside (no 5) to the bus station. This is one of the main water bus stops where you can take a no 82 or 1 which will drop you right outside the Rialto Hotel. (It is about 45 mins from the airport to the hotel). We found this much easier than we were expecting. If you are staying in Venice for a few days make sure you buy a travel pass from the Tourist Information inside the terminal before getting the bus as this will allow you unlimited use on the buses and water buses. As well as the water bus stop right outside the hotel (they are very easy to use but my advice would be to have a map before you go, available in some travel guides) it is only a few minutes walk (maybe 10 mins depending on how quickly you walk) to St Marks Square. None of the main sights were more than about 30 mins walk from the Railto but in those cases you could always use the water bus.

March 2004 I can not imagine staying anywhere except the Hotel Rialto in Venice. The staff was very friendly and our room was large with a sette and a Venitian chandlier. (Our room was the one in front with the balcony and the flags.) The view was spectacular even at night. We got a great price through the internet and we would highly recomend it for anyone going to Venice.

This was an ideal location for first-time visitors like ourselves - more or less in the centre of Venice. If however, you are arriving by water bus from the airport, this may be a bit of a trek from St Marks' with your luggage. Would advise getting a bus from the airport to the Piazalle Roma, and then the water bus down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Bridge. The room was larger than I had anticipated, and I had been lead to believe that the bathroom would be without a bath, but I was pleasantly surpised. One downside was the ludicrous amount of stairs we had to climb on the way to our room (up in the rafters). By the end of our stay my buns and calves were very finely tuned.
Nevertheless it didn't ruin our stay and I would happily recommend it to all.

This was our first trip to Italy, and Hotel Rialto did not disappoint! First, the location and ease of arrival were hard to beat in Venice. As another reviewer stated, train to Santa Lucia (do not get off on the first Venice (Mestre) stop like most tourists on our train did, us included..) Vaporetto to Rialto bridge, and walk about the width of a sidewalk in the front doors of the hotel! Above average, very classy hotel, nice decor, immaculately clean. Hotel staff were professional, friendly, English speaking, and were very helpful to me when I had problems with my bank back home. Internet service in lobby for small fee, and they were able to fax something to my bank for me.
We had a wonderfully large quad room for my husband and I and our 2 boys, 12 and 17. Had king bed and 2 twins, with sm. couch, chairs, desk, vanity, tv, walk in closet. Bathroom was normal sized, nice tile. Decor in room was very 'Venetian" , but that was part of the fun!
We had two windows that opened onto the Grand Canal/Rialto Bridge view.
Was a bit of noise from the vaporetto stop out front (when we were
enjoying the view and ambience with the windows open) but okay when
windows and shutters closed.
Good central location, able to walk easily to St. Marks, Academy, etc. The included breakfast buffet was not the best of all the hotels we stayed in, but was adequate, had bakery goods, cereal, hard boiled eggs, coffee, juices, etc.
As we were walking around the city and seeing people walking through the tiny streets, up and over the many canal bridges with their luggage, we especially appreciated the ease of stepping off the vaporetto and into the hotel lobby, and up the elevator to our room! Another plus is that when we got lost walking, or were unsure, there would frequently be signs for the Rialto bridge, or we could ask anyone 'which way to Rialto bridge'- everyone in Venice knows where that is, so we could always find our way back....
Again, would highly recommend this hotel for its physical qualities, location, and staff. Ciao!

If you're looking for a Venice hotel that is centrally located and convenient with transportation, Hotel Rialto is among the better choices. It is by no means a lavish facility, yet its assets outweigh its liabilities.First the liabilities, one of which might be that the bathrooms are quite small and basic. But what one must keep in mind is that most hotels in Venice have been carved out of buildings that have been there for centuries; there is no place to add space without completely gutting the interior. But at least our room (minus the bathroom) was spacious and well decorated. Our sons stayed in their own room, which was almost as spacious and adorned in its own genre, thus indicating the variety of themes from room to room. One might also say that another mark against Hotel Rialto is that, although it is a waterfront hotel (a must for any tourist in Venice!), there are stations for taxis and waterbuses between the hotel and the water. But, of course, the optimist would see this as a convenience in transportation. And a convenience it is as, upon our arrival, we stepped off the boat right in front of the hotel! There also exists another very nice plus because of this boat-stop area: One of the water taxis will take you straight to the island of Murano, where the glass factories and shops are located. Hotel Rialto has a deal worked out with these taxis, thereby offering this free transportation. Note: this deal includes a ride to the island only, not from. Its assets are aplenty.First, location, location, location! Its front door is quite literally ten steps away from the Rialto Bridge, the subject of many a photographer and artist. If your room, like ours, is located on the front thus overlooking the canal, you can lean out the window and easily take a snapshot of your friends standing on the bridge (forever a great conversation piece complete with bragging rights!).As well, it is on the Grand Canal, which is very open and picturesque. Shops and restaurants are all around as well as street vendors and a small daytime flea market right around the corner. Also, don't forget to take out a few minutes each day to enjoy their private terrace that overlooks the Grand Canal. The terrace is accessible to HR guests only and, chances are, you may be the only one up there enjoying it for as much as thirty minutes at a time.A fifteen-minute stroll through the charming walkways of this historic city takes you straight to San Marcos Plaza, which most agree is the centerpiece of town. Finally, at the risk of sounding snobbishly American, English is spoken quite well by much of the staff, especially at the front desk. Please know that our family learned as much Italian as we could for this vacation, mostly for our own benefit, but also to avoid the appearance of cultural arrogance. But being able to communicate in our native tongue did make things easier. To summarize, if one asked me which hotel is economically the best for a tourist in Venice, I would not hesitate to recommend Hotel Rialto. It was my third visit there, not making me a pro by any stretch of the imagination, but no beginner either. And this was by far the best of all three hotels I have experienced in this ancient city.

My family of five stayed at the Rialto for three nights in July of 2002. The hotel is a warren of corridors and rooms spread out through several connecting buildings, sometimes a bit of a walk, but not unpleasant. We took two rooms, not connecting, which were small but elegant in a Venetian way, with bright colors, crystal chandeliers, and marble baths. Breakfast was about average for an Italian hotel, but the location of the hotel is superb, right at the Rialto bridge and within walking distance of most sights. It's on the Grand Canal, and a water taxi stops right outside the front door. The price was quite affordable for Venice. As beautiful and evocative as Venice is, it would take a very bad hotel indeed to ruin the experience. The Rialto won't ruin it for you.

Just returned from a 4-day stay at the Rialto. Very pleased with the Hotel and staff. We were up 3 flights of stairs, but thats not unusual in Venice. Room was compact and clean with TV and modest Mini Bar. No tea or coffee making facilities though. Best thing about the Hotel is location, we walked to Ghetto, Piazza Roma, Rialto markets, San Marco all within comfortable distance. We did buy a 3 day vaporetto pass for euro 22 and used it extensively for trips to murano, or getting around when we were tired or just fancied a boat ride. Best for getting from Marco Polo to Venice, ATVO (blue Bus) from terminal to Piazza Roma, Euro 3 20 mins direct.
Word of warning, dont eat at Ristorante al Colombo, just along from the Rialto. Apparantly famed for its association with artists, it charges extortionate prices for very average food. I dont mind paying for good food, but I begrudged having to pay for the dross this place served up. As a guide, for a meal for two with wine dont expect change from Euro 250. You expect to pay that price (if not less) in a top hotel restaurant, such as cip's in the Cipriani Hotel but at least the food is good!
Would recommend Antica Trattoria Poste Vecia near the Rialto fish market (Euro 45pp), and Trattoria Madonna (Euro 30) for a less glamorous but still very good meal, opposite bank to the Rialto hotel down a small alley. Oh, and Harry's bar.....dont bother!
