The Kumeyaay people inhabited San Diego for a long time, but the city was later on invaded by Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo. He was the first European settler in San Diego and he named the city “San Miguel” which stayed that way for almost half a century. The city's name was changed to “San Diego” by Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602.
