The origins of the palazzo that hosts Scandinavia hotel go back deep in time. The building dates from the year 1000 and it is said that this is the very place where Desdemona met Othello, the "Moor of Venice."
The palazzo was renovated in the 16th century by the Trevisan family, a wealthy merchant dynasty, that lived in it for generations.
In the fifties, the Tinacci family transformed the palazzo into the hotel Scandinavia, managing to preserve the atmosphere of an ancient Venetian residence handed down through the centuries. The is one of the Venetian Hotels that most reflects the spirit of an aristocratic Venetian residence. The Hotel windows provide a stupendous view: to the building's left is the Church of Santa Maria Formosa, whose name is linked to an ancient legend. It is said that this "Campo" was the site of the apparition of a rather prosperous-looking Madonna and, to celebrate this miracle, a church was built in 1492 that was given the name of Santa Maria Formosa (the Buxom).
The hotel occupies one of the best locations in Venice: Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge are only a few minutes away on foot; from the nearby vaporetto landings you can reach the train station, Piazzale Rome and all the places of artistic interest.
LOCATION
From Scandinavia hotel, guests can reach Piazza San Marco in about 5 minutes on foot: the heart of Venice is close at hand. You will find a truly unique spectacle: the Palazzo Ducale, the Basilica di San Marco, the Piazza.
Even the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal is extremely close to the Hotel Scandinavia: it takes just a few minutes on foot to see one of the most famous bridges in the world. Of all the hotels of Venice, the Hotel Scandinavia has one of the best locations!
Not far from the hotel, the "imbarcaderi" or vaporetto landings allow you to easily reach the train station and Piazzale Roma and all the most interesting places in Venice, such as the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello and the Lido of Venice, which every September hosts the International Venice Film Festival.
Even the setting of the Hotel Scandinavia is unique. The palazzo overlooks Campo di Santa Maria Formosa, where you can see the church that dates from 1492 and the Baroque bell tower built in 1688.

good place to stay - affordable and convenient
Scandinavia Hotel is affordable, good standard hotel with only 33 rooms located just a few bridges away from San Marco. Clean basic rooms and very helpful staff. But what made it for us was that it was located in a Plazza with church, bars and easy connections to other parts of Venice, bars, shops and local cuisines. It all felt very non touristy and that is a good experience in itself. We sat outside the hotel and watched the locals go about their business and the gondolas go past. Breakfast was standard; but the cooks regularly delivered fresh warm bread rolls. The Breakfast room was a bit squashed due to the lack of table for a number of guests. But that was a minor inconvenience. Otherwise, Scandinavia Hotel is great place to stay, clean, affordable and very conveniently located. Go for it!!!

Excellent Value
We have been to Venice twice before. This time while visiting Venice in September, we benefited from a good deal at Scandinavia Hotel. The first positive impression of the hotel was obtained prior to the trip when we called to confirm our reservation and give some preferences for a room with a view of the plaza and the receptionist was absolutely delightful.
Upon arrival, we were warm welcomed by the reception staff that were smiling days and nights, always with a few cheerful words or ready to help and advice.
The hotel is ancient, and yes, it has an air of shabby decadence in places, but then so does the whole of Venice, that is its charm... The room was clean, with a smallish, but more than adequate en-suite bathroom, and an amazing wooden ceiling. This is not the height of luxury, but neither is it lacking, and I couldn't fault it for the price we paid.
Scandinavia Hotel is set on a charming piazza with a canal on 2 sides and one of the oldest Venetian churches across the square; it is less than 10 mns walk from either the Rialto bridge if you turn right, or Piazza San Marco if you turn left.
Absolutely, fantastic experience. Oh, and the breakfast,,,, was plentiful,, nothing to complain about.
All in all, we had an amazing time at Scandinavia Hotel. would strongly recommend since Scandinavia Hotel is an excellent value for money.

Ideal tourist hotel in Venice
We visited Venice for our Silver wedding and choose the Scandinavia because the deal seemed good after reading reviews and looking at prices.
We were on the second floor in a nice room overlooking the square. The room was furnished in a traditional style, the bathroom was modern and, we think, brand new. Looking at other rooms that gave on to the narrow alley we thought they did not seem as inviting.
Breakfast was adequate. Staff very friendly and helpful. No lift so if stairs are a problem look elsewhere, but actually a norm for most of European countries.
We thought the location of Scandinavia hotel was excellent, just 5 minutes max to the Rialto and St Marks Square, plenty of restaurants and a mini-market close by.
Overall, we find Scandinavia Hotel as an ideal tourist hotel – we would definitely come back ourselves.

Centrally located
My sister and I stayed here for two nights late this summer. Once we figured out Venice's confusing system of little streets, we realized how central Scandinavia Hotel was to everything. It was far enough out of the heavily touristed area to be quiet in the evenings, yet within easy walking distance of everything you need. When we first rounded a corner and caught sight of it across Santa Maria Formosa Square, we couldn't believe our good fortune!
The interior of the hotel is very tastefully decorated, with tons of antiques and pictures that make you feel like you've stepped into Renaissance Venice. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, and they put on a terrific breakfast buffet. It was excellent value for the money, and we would both love to return to Scandinavia Hotel. Highly recommended!

Excellent location, excellent customer service
Briefly to comment on Scandinavia Hotel - good location, clean and nicely presented hotel, excellent as a base for discovering Venice.
We had 2 nights in the Hotel Scandanavia en route to Lake Garda. The hotel is fairly close to the vaparetto stops and is minutes walk from the Rialto and San Marco square - excellent location. The hotel is located in a beautiful piazza with a nice little bar just outside. Inside the rooms are extremely clean and very spacious. The vintage look of these rooms is very quaint and everything you would expect and want from a hotel room in Venice. The staff were superb. I had left my mobile phone in the safe and only realised this after my departure. I called the hotel and they not only located my phone but then posted this onto me back home in the UK.
I cannot fault Scandinavia Hotel and would certainly recommended it based on its great location and great customer service.
