The Ideal Hotel in Old Town...
Scotsman Hotel is set in the Victorian building which housed the offices of the Scotsman Newspaper for more than 100 years. Located on North Bridge between the Princes Street shopping area and the Royal Mile, the hotel is within sight of Waverley Railway station.
Each room is different, but all are decorated in modern neutral colors with traditional Scottish tweeds as the unifying theme. Rooms have privacy hatches, so room service can be delivered without disturbing guests, as well as computers with Internet access and an Edinburgh monopoly board table.
In the North Bridge Brasserie guests and non-residents can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner from a varied menu, in a striking setting that contrasts original marble pillars and wood paneling with new steel flooring and a striking metal staircase.

I was a bit concerned on our choice of hotel after reading the previous review a few days before we went. However, on arrival, the hotel & staff were second to none! We had booked a great deal online & arrived to find we had been upgraded to a Publisher Suite! The room was wonderful with fantastic views over the city & many luxurious touches. We found 'Escape' with great ease (get into the lift & follow the signs!) & the staff there were so helpful & welcoming. The swimming pool is well worth a visit & if you can manage it early morning, you will probably have the whole place to yourself. A special word has to be be said for the Concierges, who did an amazing job. They even accompanied us the few short steps into the brasserie & found us a seat! Unlike the previous reviewer, we found that we received more attention by coming through the back door, so don't dream of going out onto the street!! Overall we had a truly superb time & am currently checking out another visit!

We have just returned from a weekend break in Edinburgh having stayed at this wonderful hotel. I just can't tell you how much we enjoyed the break thanks to the superb staff. We had an amzing room, which was bigger than expected with a huge bay window. The bathroom was gorgeous with marble, molten brown and even a penguin soap!! We loved the extra touches of the cd/dvd player and the very cool hatch concept so that you can have your room serviced delivered without disturbing you. The spa was lovely and worth a visit just to see that stainless steel pool, although you might have a hard time naigating round the corridors of the hotel finding your way!!! All in all, the hotel is very just gorgoeus. we can't wait to go back.

My friend and I recently stayed at The Scotsman. We arrived the weekend after the MTV crowd had checked out and I'm pretty sure we were treated just as well as all the celebrities would have been! Our room on the 8th floor was enormous and beautifully-decorated. Gavin, the Concierge, showed us all the facilities and was very charming. We visited the spa on two separate occasions. What a place! The dimly-lit pool area was most atmospheric. The ever-changing neon strip-lights situated just below the water-level was inspired. The breakfast was phenomenal! Every member of staff we met was unfailingly friendly and polite. This hotel is a perfect model of how all hotels should be run. In short: we liked it a lot!

Due to a error in our reservation we managed to see 3 types of room during our 2 night stay. Standard rooms - very small and not what i would expect from this hotel, not acceptable & over-priced. Deluxe room - as long as you get one on a level above floor 5 it should be ok - fitments excellent, average room size for a city hotel. Publishers suite - expensive but much more room and large bathroom. All the bedrooms had fantastic features for those who like gadgets, it is obvious a lot of thought has been put into the room requirements. The North Bridge Brasserie - good atmosphere, good food & service. Do not come here for lavish surroundings, come for excellent facilities and friendly service.

Just home from a three night stay at this wonderful hotel. Location could not be better for seeing the sites of Edinburgh, marvellous city that she is. We had an Editor's room, brilliantly done up in tweeds with great views of Calton Hill in one direction, the Scott monument and Prince's Street in the other. The room has absolutely every ammenity you could possibly want from coffee and tea makers to flat screen TV with internet access...even a big old-fashioned bath tub installed int eh turrett in the corner fo the room! The food was first rate-- especially in the Breakfast room and Vermillion Restaurant. The staff could not do enough for you and were extremely helpful. Now, as to that swimming pool, as a hotel guest you have access to Escape, the splendid healthclub in the 68 room hotel. There you will find 60 workout stations and one incredibly stunning 60 foot swimming pool. If you are any kind of hotel fancier The Scotsman truly should not be missed .

I could not fault the Scotsman Hotel if I tried. The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive, the room was glorious, the swimming pool has to be seen to be believed and the location is prefect. We had a wonderful time and are already planning our next visit.

I stayed in the Scotsman hotel last sunday for the first and last time. What a major disappointment on a number of points.....this is no-way a five star hotel, I'd say it was more 3 star.....possibly 4 at a push. Arriving at 1-ish on Sunday afternoon our Publishers suite room was still occupied and we did not get into it til well after 3!!! Fair enough maybe....but the rudeness of the girl on front desk when we didn't check out on Monday morning til 12.40. The television wasn't working in the living room area.... and there was no remote.
My fiancee requires a foam duvet and pillows due to a feather allergy....these took a few phone calls too many too arrange and were even told they didin't do foam duvets at one point.
Probaly the biggest complaint has to be the lack of air-conditioning in the hotel!!!! We were swelteringly hot all night because the windows are locked in the room!!!..... as the front desk said...its great in winter, but no good in summer..... so no good nights sleep in the summer months.
Why would anyone ever want to stay in the over-hyped over-priced joke of a hotel. There is the BALMORAL just a couple of hundred yards away which we stayed in on Saturday night..... wonderful in every way....the most friendly efficient staff, grandeur in every area, the No'1 restaurant is to die for, the huge comfortable rooms, the fantastic views of the castle etc...... i could go on. Roll on my next Edinburgh stay in this Scottish hotel heaven.

A hotel that cannot be faulted, from the friendliness and professionalism of all the staff - with an excellent Concierge, very comfortable rooms, and 2 superb restaurants. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to be looked after in first class accomodation, in a first class city.

After a long drive north from Durham and York, and navigating Edinburgh streets in a rainy rush-hour, we checked into the outstanding, centrally-located Scotsman and into a five-star room overlooking the New Town and Calton Hill. The whole hotel experience was top-rate from the concierge service (wife's luggage was misplaced coming from US and they were very helpful in arranging for its being forwarded from Manchester to Edinburgh) to the breakfasts (mentioned in review above), the fully-equipped gym and the marble and wood bathroom. The staff was professional and courteous. When we return to Edinburgh we're staying here and nowhere else.
