Location, Climate
Siem Reap is one of the top tourist destinations in Southeast Asia mainly because of the magnificent Angkor Wat. It is located northwest of Cambodia and serves as a gateway to the Angkor region. Brief History
The history of Siem Reap started in 802 when the Khemer tribe inhabited the city. Most of Siem Reap's temples were constructed during the 11th and 12th centuries. It was colonized by France in 1847, but the Vietnamese army took over Siem Reap in mid-1950s. The most significant event in Siem Reap's history was the establishment of Angkor Tom.
Events, Landmarks, Activities
The most extravagant event in Siem Reap is the Chaul Chnam or also known as the Khmer New Year which is usually held in mid-April. This 3-day festival features banquets, live music, dancing, colorful processions and numerous parties. A trip to Siem Reap won't be complete without visiting the Angkor Archaeological Park where you can find numerous temples including the world-famous Angkor Wat. Other must-see attractions include the Cambodia Cultural Village, Angkor Silk Farm, Crocodile Farm and Tonle Sap Lake.
Transportation
There are buses and taxis at the airport that can take you to your destination. Once you are in the city, you can ride a tuk-tuk (motorcycle taxi) to explore nearby areas. For long-distance travels, it is advisable to rent a car.
