My husband and I have just spent a week at the Starhotel Excelsior in Bologna and had a very enjoyable stay. The facilities and service were excellent, as was the food. Apart from a very good breakfast each day, we also used the Avorio restaurant one evening, and found the style and standard definitely gourmet. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. The hotel is very conveniently located opposite the station, which is the terminus for the airport bus and also makes travel to other towns in the area (or, indeed, elsewhere in Italy) very easy. The main park is close by and it's only a 15 minute walk to the centre of Bologna, which we found a very beautiful and civilised city. |

We stayed at the Starhotel on a weekend rate of 139 for a deluxe room.
The major attraction is that it is modern and well-equipped, unlike the typical Italian luxury hotel which relies more on reputation than capital investment! The room was on the small side but stylish and modern. Service was generally good and friendly, but let down by the barman who refused to serve us because it was midnight (exactly) and he closed at midnight. The area outside the hotel is a bit dodgy, but at least there's a taxi rank right opposite to get you into the nice part of town quickly. |

I stayed at the StarHotel on work. My room was a decent size, clean and quiet. The overall service by staff was excellent. The hotel is located opposite to the main station and this was very helpful for travel elsewhere in Italy. Distances from the Hotel to the University and attractions is fine.
If I have one complaint it was their breakfast. Very disorganised and of a poor standard. If you are a vegetarian, be warned that will not have lots of variety. The quality of food was also poor.
In summary, a decent Italian hotel which I would recommend ad use again if I had to. |
