I was there with my partner just before Xmas, and we were assigned a simply faboulus room on the 5th floor. This floor has been recently refurbished with beautiful and stylish furnitures...Our stay in Rome couldn't have been more pleasant.

The Ancient City and the 7 Hills all in 10 days with side trips to Florence and Assisi all handled by Globus Tours. The tour guide was a plus and I believe on any trip to a foreign country for touring when time is limited. You can read ahead of time.... But Globus was fantastic with explanations of the sights .If there was a negative for the 10days it was using the Star Metropole Hotel. 10days in one hotel is marvelous, if the staff is courteous and leaves the air conditioning on when the rooms are closed all day and temps in the 70's. Many people in our tour had no air the entire time. I was fortunate , after complaints magic the air worked. They control the air not the room thermostat. As far as hotel location great surrounding area just several blocks to the bus or train station multiple churches within walking distance. The interior of the hotel upscale rooms for two are small by navigable.. Front desk is in need of customer service training an added smile and the removal of the attitide. The trours handled by Globus could not have been better. Bus always air conditioned tour guide informative pleasant and very helpful.I took two visits to the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican because it just cant be taken in in one guided tour.No visitor passes up the coins in the Trevi fountain. The street to get to Trevi reminds me much of a South Philly small street that allows parking on one side . It is very small but as you reach the end you see the fountain. An attraction to see.The Coliseum is a marval also.. To see is to believe it remains standing after all these years.I never found a bad restaurant the entire 10 days. The hotel provided breakfast each morning as part of the tour.Airplane travel in both directions was timely and without security issues in Philadelphia. 8hrs over 9hrs back. That ride over in the black of night over the ocean ... if you cant sleep is the second negative . Crusie over and take amonth to do all the above and more...I will return.

Booked this hotel through a travel agent without really knowing much about it. I should have done some reseach first!Hotel is in a quite rundown area near the main railway station. When we found it, first impressions were good, a nice lobby and dining area. But I was first alarmed by the behaviour of the staff who were arrogant and unhelpful. However, this did not prepare me for the room, which was like a small rabbit hutch. No wallpaper, only some sort of coconut matting up the walls. No curtains, only a metal shutter. Lights that did not work and were never fixed dispite our reports to reception. Fixed furniture (I suppose to prevent damage by customers). No draw space for clothes. Water backfilling through drainage system to cover bathroom floor...I could go on!!If you wish to see Ancient Rome, which I would recommend, then please steer clear of this Hotel.

The hotel was big, pretty luxurious, and just what we needed to end our trip. The hotel room was very spacious, the floors on the bathroom were heated and the bed was about a queen size (though it might have been two beds put together).
A pretty good breakfast is served in the mornings and the location can't be beat. It's about a 20 minute walk to the forum and a 1 minute walk to the Metro station (Termini). All in all, the staff was helpful and it could not have been better.

Did the other reviewer stay in the basement? Or is s/he used to ultra-Luxurious accommodations? My husband and I stayed here in Oct 2002 and would go back in a hearbeat. In fact, we are! Everyone was helpful and courteous and spoke excellent English. The rooms were spacious, spotless and modern. My husband is VERY picky and thought this hotel was great. An added bonus was the grand buffet breakfast. We Americans are so spoiled sometimes...I don't know what garnered a "terrible" from the other reviewer. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. It is right around the corner from the Termini Station; however, it was safe and quiet. I especially liked that we could walk to all the attractions. I would compare it to a Holiday Inn or Best Western+ (not "luxury", but better than a Days Inn).

My husband and I stayed here in late April. When we checked in they told us our room wasn't ready and finally when it was they put us in a room that literally was in a construction zone - I know Euro hotels are loud, but this was like someone was banging on our pipes and jack hammering our walls. We called front desk and they ended up putting us in a LOVELY junior suite. The windo opened up onto a courtyard, the breakfast buffet was great, and the hotel was in a great location. So over all a wonderful stay - just DON'T let them try and put you in room 101!!!

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Metropole Hotel Rome in May 2004. It was really central and when the receptionist spotted on arrival that it was my 50th birthday he upgraded us to a suite with a lounge and whirlpool bath---bliss after a long hot walk after we mistakenly took a wrong turn when walking from the station. In fact the hotel was only 5 minutes walk from the station but just far enough away not to be affected by some of the slightly unsavoury characters you always find near stations in any capital city. The room was lovely, the breakfast was good and the staff were very helpful and most spoke very good English. I have to say that nothing was too much trouble for them. We would definitely stay there again even without the room upgrade.

The Starhotel Metropole is perfectly located just a few mins from the Termini Train Station. Also close to the metro station that goes direct to the Vatican and Spanish steps. About 20 mins walk downhill to the Colosseum (don't try it uphill from town unless you have a lot of stamina!).
The reception staff were particularly helpful and directed us to a lovely restaurant in Trastevere. The room was big, clean and excellently furnished. It was very quiet.
Breakfast offered an excellent choice and good coffee.
Would recommend the hotel and go again, if in Rome!

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Metropole in Rome (April 2004) The hotel was fantastic and the staff very pleasant and friendly. The hotel is ideally situated and within walking distance of all the major attractions and the termini train station. A quick recommendation: If you decide to travel from the airport to the hotel by train, when you arrive in the Termini station walk through the station to the far end using the flat escalators. When leaving the station turn right and walk until you pass the large Police station, then turn left and first left and the hotel is approximately 50metres on your right. We made the mistake of walking straight out of the station and ended up having to walk the entire length of the Via Amedeo as the hotel is at the far end from the station. That being said the walk is only about 10mins. I would definately stay again if in Rome!!

We stayed at the Metropole on the 12th March.Within walking distance from the Termini Train Station. We got upgraded to one of the newly re-furbished rooms, with lovely decor, sparkling bathrooms with televisons, new modern furniture.Reception staff very friendly and helpful.Breakfast buffet excellent.Do note, yes there are still some rooms with the coconut matting on the walls, as from the 6th floor upwards all these rooms have been upgraded to a very high standard. When you check in as k for the recently refurbished rooms, they are soundproofed. It seems large tour groups were getting the old style rooms but they will be upgraded in the future.None of the refurbishment was heard.
