Brief History

The Carthaginian colonists discovered Tangier during the 5th century BC. The name of the city was probably taken from the Berber goddess called Tinjis or Tinga. According to mythological tale, it was the son of Tinjis namely Sufax who built the town. Tinjis was the wife of Anti who was a legendary Berber hero. The Greeks called Sufax as the son of the mighty Hercules.

Transportation

The best way to explore Tangier is simply by walking since the city is quite compact. There are two main roads in Tangier: the Boulevard Mohamed V and Boulevard Mohamed VI. Those who prefer to ride can hire the petit taxis, but they usually don't use the meter so make sure that you negotiate a price before hopping in.
