I would recommend the Hotel Terminus to anyone looking for a very central, lively Hotel. The staff were hepful when we needed them and the rooms are well equiped.
After staying at the Terminus, I thought it would be useful to post a review in response to all those that scared me!
Hotel terminus is not a 5* Hotel BUT it is above average standard (this was my 3rd time in Amsterdam). It is a noisy hotel if you are at the front but if you are used to city living and enjoy being in the middle of things, it's not a problem.
We paid a little extra for superior rooms and although 2 out of the 3 rooms in our party were excellent, 1 wasn't so grand.... but it was still clean and roomy.
The hotel is VERY central; right next to the Red Light district, very close to Dam Square & the Palace and almost in sight from Centraal station.
I am not saying that the bad reviews are inaccurate as I did not see the standard rooms but in my experience, the Hotel Terminus gave me peace of mind for our trip. enjoy.

Forget the bad reviews. I stayed there with my Girlfriend from April 23-25. 2004 and we found it great!
Very friendly staff, a nice room and the biggest bathroom I?ve ever had in a hotel room.
All attractions (I repeat: ALL...) are in close distance.
I recommend it! See you again soon!

went to amsterdam for the first time with two friends for six nights & stayed at the terminus. at first the staff was very rude-especially the "tall blone guy" but after the first day they were pretty cool, even the "tall blonde guy".
the room was pretty shabby but livable. i thought the room was pretty secure after the "tall blonde guy" finally got our safe working, even though we heard some people had all of their luggages stolen from thier room when we were there. the street was not as loud as everyone says although me and my friends were up till 10am every night wasted anyway. location is the main factor in this hotel, it is a 2 minn walk to the red light dist and damrak and a short taxi to the clubs. plenty of coffeshops in the area and a GREAT Doner (sort of like gyro) joint around the corner. i would stay there again.

We arrived in the cold on January 28th.it took us a while to find the hotel because the snow was coming down and it was freezing. We went to the Tourist Board who showed us exactly where it was. It took us 5 mins from Centraal Station to get there. We checked in 4 hours early and got a double bedded room. We turned the heating on as it was cold, within minutes it was boiling hot! It was a funny shape and the bathroom was a good size with a good shower that worked. Our room backed onto the street above the hotel front opening, it was very quiet. We didnt stay for breakfast, because we had to get our flight home. But we are definately booking this hotel again for the Queens Birthday celebrations and the huge street parties. I would definitely recommend this hotel for it being central, clean and the best soft beds we have ever slept in......

This hotel is very near the Central Station and Red Light District. Its a very noisy part of town at night. The rooms are small, for some reason very very warm for winter (I had to open a window to cool the room off at night). The hallways remind me of a fun house, twists and turns, and stairs. My room was on the 3rd floor, but I had trouble finding it. I was told it was on the "other" third floor. The doors seemed rather thin and guests tended to be noisy. If you want a hotel in the "party" area, this is your place. If you want a nice quiet hotel, this is not it.

Great central location (within fifty metres of 4 coffee shops), room was clean and well appointed and the hotel staff were always very freindly and helpful (gave out free tickets to the Holland Casino). However, breakfast was uninspired cold cuts, etc - but at least there was plenty.
