The Hotel was originally built in Waihi in 1897 by Mr E.Morgan. It had seventy five rooms and was named the “New Central Hotel”. The first proprietors were Mr and Mrs N.G. Power.
Prohibition was voted into Waihi in the early 1900’s and despite a recount, Waihi was voted dry. This came about as an act of defiance to Shorty Buckland, the then proprietor of the Hotel, increasing the beer prices.

Due to this fact and coupled with a population decline, the Hotel was dismantled piece by piece, numbered and bullocked to the rail road in 1917. The Hotel’s re-Construction began in January 1921.
The Hotel was then re-named The “Princes Gate Hotel”. The name became symbolic of the archway entrance to the Government Gardens which had been originally built to commemorate the visit by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall in 1901. The archway was originally erected across the junction of Fenton and Hinemoa Streets, and re-erected on its present site in 1920 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales.

The Hotel was used as a hospital during the first and second world wars.

The present proprietors Brett and Vlasta Marvelly purchased the Hotel in 1986 with one thing in mind, to make the Princes Gate Hotel not only New Zealand’s finest Boutique Hotel but an attraction for locals and tourists alike.

PROPERTY AMENITIES

* Memories Restaurant
As the name indicates this restaurant celebrates the spirit of the bygone years. This is made more evident in the décor of the place. High studded Kauri ceilings, ostentatious chandeliers seem to enhance the beauty of the eatery. All that you wish to savor, be it Continental or Oriental, is enlisted in the menu. Along with your food you can order for drinks here too.

* The Club
Dining is an important ingredient of the amenities at Princess Gate Hotel. The proof of the fact is that the hotel consists not of one but more than one eatery. At the Club you will be served mostly continental stuff and dining will be more of a pleasure because their will be some good music to go with it.

* The Gate Bar
This bar is thoroughly European in décor. Leather chairs, rimu floors and 100 year old lead light windows, which is the characteristic of this place. A glass of New Zealand beer or wine, a martini, cocktail or a specially brewed cup of coffee here is really a good idea.

* Arrangements have been made in the hotel to meet the needs of these guests. There are two conference rooms in the hotel and a boardroom that seats 12 people. There is a theatre style auditorium that can hold upto 120 delegates. There is another meeting room which can accommodate 50 odd people.

* The other advantage of holding your conference here is that the Rotorua Convention Centre is just opposite to the Princess Gate Hotel. To make the business guests' meeting a success each of the rooms has fresh flowers on the table and snacks are served to the guests on request.

* There is a sauna where you can get a relaxing massage. The plunge pool and the thermal- control pool are the two kinds of swimming pools in the hotel. Within the hotel's premise there is a tennis court too. You can put on hold your daily chores too. Laundry services are also provided to the guests.
ROOM AMENITIES
