There are a lot of mixed reviews about this Hotel and it is almost as though there is a decent half to it and a grotty half, judging by the split. If this is so, I must say we were in the good half. It was clean, tidy and staff were helpful. Location was good despite a couple of seedy joints nearby. It really was fine!!!

We stayed in the Tryp Apolo during September 2003 and found the hotel to be excellent. The front desk were very helpful on our arrival and we found our room to be very nice. Location wise I think the hotel was ideal within easy walking distance to Las Ramblas and the harbour area which is lovely to walk round. Breakfast was absolutely delicious and there was plenty of selection to set you up for the day. I had looked at various hotels before booking our trip and am very glad I chose the Tryp Apolo and would definitely go back again.Pamela and Steven Stewart, Glasgow

after reading the other reviews i can honestly say that the positive far out weights the negative. The tryp appollo is well situated for La Rambla and Port Vell, and yes while i can see why some people may be aprehensive about the area, it really isn't that bad, with only 500yds or so down to the columbus colon which marks the entry to both the port and the rambla. there are plenty of taxis outside the hotel at all times, and the metro is literally outside the door. we ate in the hotel restaurant at night during our stay, and the food and service were both excellent. i must add that the reason we did not leave the hotel at night was nothing to do with the area, (oh but there was a guy with a crowbar and knife who walked past us at one point) but simply because we were so tired from enjoying this fabulous city. don't let a few negative comments put you off staying at the apollo.

I've stayed in a lot of different hotels....and this one is OK. I have to say the place was very clean, tidy and in good decorative order. The staff were helpful and the location ideal. What is more it was cheap as we booked it on an gtahotels offer. I would definitely stay there again and had no complaints at all.

The basics: I stayed at the Apolo in August 2003. And I am in the middle income band. The review: The bellboy helped with my heavy baggage and I gave a tip of E2. The reception staff was fantastic and very friendly. I went up to my room with my cardkey and after 5 minutes, I returned to the reception asking for a change. The air-con was not in the best shape and the noise from the road was just too much for me. I got another room, checked the air-con and the noise and was finally happy. This hotel is a 20 minutes walk away from the shopping main street "Rambla" via "Nou de la Rambla". From "Nou de la Rambla", it is a 10 minutes walk away from the self-wash laundry and police station, 15 minutes walk from "Museum Palau Guell". Apolo is situated near the end of the main road "Av. Paral.lel" and is 30 seconds from the nearest subway "Parallel". Walk further along "Av. Paral.lel", about 15 minutes and you will hit the beach! Conclusion: Excellent location, so-so hotel (they should look at restructuring the maintenance department!)

I stayed here last week with my boyfriend and got a great late deal. The room was huge considering what we'd paid for it and had a mini bar, cable tv, bath, shower and a huge bed. The buffet breakfast is amazing, and even has a good selection for vegetarians, unlike the rest of Barcelona! We had no problem with the area and felt perfectly safe walking around at night. There's basically a couple of strip clubs in the area but they seem to be everywhere in Barcelona. The weather was terrible and didn't stop raining so the hotel more than made up for it. The only problem was when we checked our bags in on the last day and 2 of them were missing when we went to pick them up, and one of the managers was to busy dealing with another complaint to even acknowledge mine but they found them after 30 mins and we got to our flight on time.

May 2004 - my husband and I are just back from 5 days in the Tryp Apolo. Before going had read this review site and were not looking forward to going - had tried to change hotels with Globe Span but , due to the excessive charge which would have been applicable - had no option but to 'stick with it' -... a twenty minute taxi ride from the airport- 28 euros including 2 bags - and we were there. The extrance to the hotel looked fine - although the 'automatic turn around' entrance door had an out of order sign posted - which looked like it had been there for some time - the door was never available during our stay there and the side door was used - a pity because it was our first impression of the hotel. The receptionist was professional and helpful and we asked for a room without too much noice - we were allocated a room on the 6th floor (noise difficult to suppress because of the busy road below) very clean, comfortable beds, linen and bathroom clean - although a quick lick of emulsion on the walls would have made a difference. Breakfast was included in our package - and that was really good - all that you could want to eat and efficient and friendly staff. Smoker side of the restaurant has the best view - the other side looking over the road below. Location was definitely seedy if you crossed over the Paral-Lel with some doubtful characters around - but if you turn left out of the hotel, 10 minutes pleasant walking and you reach the Columbus Column and from there you are almost at La Rambla- great fun and a 'people watchers' paradise. The Para-lel metro is just outside of the hotel and so is the bus stop. - no problem getting around from there to all of the sites in Barcelona and fare is really cheap. Would consider using the Tryp again for a short break and for value for money. Oddly enough the taxi fare back to the airport was only about 17 euros. Have a great time!Nick and Mags

Having read some of the previous reviews I was not expecting much, however, the service was prompt and curteous, the room was comfortable and quiet, the wide selection at breakfast was excellent and the location is ideal for those wanting to explore the city. For anyone wanting a good place to relax after a long day sightseeing over a weekend, the Tryp Apolo offers good value for money.

Hello, I came here with my girlfriend for a short break and booked this hotel on the internet. After reading a number of reviews we decided to book this hotel and were not disappointed. The hotel is ideally located right outside the metro station giving easy access to the whole of Barcelona and only a 5 min walk away from La Ramblas. The area is generally quiet. There are strip clubs across but the area is perfectly safe.
The hotel rooms are clean with ample space, mini bar, cable TV, shower and bath. The hotel also provides fitness room, jacuzzi and swimming pool but this is located outside the hotel in a separate building next door.
Overall we recommend this hotel although there are plenty of cheaper alternatives elsewhere in Barcelona.

Another great stay. Very happy with every aspect of hotel. ( No tea/coffee making facilities in room. Mini bar instead) Hotel clean, tidy, smart and excellent breakfast. Good location within walking distance of everything. Air conditioning only in summer. Other months ask for room away from main road as if you want your window open you will be disturbed by traffic noise. Highly recommend. Good value on accommodationow.com
