Kragujevac is the third town in Serbia and the economic lungs of Sumadija. The main historical monuments are grouped in a limited perimeter. Some of the places you should visit are Lyceum, the National Museum, the House of Svetozar Markovic.
The Memorial Museum of Sumarice is the museum that absolutely should be visited, where there are displayed the photos and texts of the best inhabitants killed on October 21st 1941. In the morning of October 21st 1941 in response to the violence of Tito's partisans in the environment, the Nazis have passed the order to evacuate the whole male population and to direct them toward this hill of Sumarice up above the town. A lot of them had succeeded to escape and to join the Resistance Movement, but 7,000 persons had been shot in one sole day. Workers, artisans, engineers or professors had been found in the same common hole with the bullet in the back of the head. But the most horrible was the order given to the children from a school to dig their own graves, a trench while their teacher had to sing. They had been killed and their bodies had been covered by the quick lime. |

Kragujevac is situated in central part of Serbia, 150 km south from Belgrade. On leaving Belgrade International Airport head east 1.5 km and merge onto highway Beograd-Nis toward Nis. Just keep going straight, following the signs for Nis/Kragujevac. After approximately 100 km take the exit for Kragujevac at Batocina. Follow the signs for Kragujevac. On entering the city, after you pass Metro Shopping Centre, continue on straight and turn right at the first intersection at Grada Sirena street. Go straight approximately 1 km and turn left at 4th street on your left. That is Luja Pastera street where the hotel is. |
