Zermatt is one of the premiere ski resorts in Europe. It is located in Switzerland's Visp district and surrounded by magnificent mountains including the country's highest mountain called Monte Rosa. If you prefer to do some walking and hiking, it is best to make reservations during summer when the weather is warm. There are many great deals in cheap hotels online.
The name of the resort was derived from the German word “matten” which means alpine meadows. The town was originally called “Zur Matte” which means “in the meadow” and was soon called Zermatt. This famous ski resort first appeared on the map in 1495 and was first mentioned in a text in 1546.
