Location, Climate

Zermatt is one of the premiere ski resorts in Europe. It is located in Switzerland's Visp district and surrounded by magnificent mountains including the country's highest mountain called Monte Rosa. Thousands of sports enthusiasts travel to Zermatt between July and September so make sure to book a cheap hotel in advance. Brief History

The name of the resort was derived from the German word “matten” which means alpine meadows. The town was originally called “Zur Matte” which means “in the meadow” and was soon called Zermatt. This famous ski resort first appeared on the map in 1495 and was first mentioned in a text in 1546.

Events, Landmarks, Activities

Zermatt hosts many sporting events annually, but two of the most attended are the Matterhorn Eagle Cup in August and the Ski-Mountaineering Race in February. There are many spectacular natural attractions in Zermatt that are worth exploring including the Klein Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Gorner Glacier, Zmutt Glacier, Gornergrat and Sunnega Paradise. Must-see museums in Zermatt include the Alpine Museum and Matterhorn Museum.

Transportation

Cars are not allowed in most areas of Zermatt so get ready to do a lot of walking. If you prefer not to walk, you can ride the electric buses or rent a bicycle. For a unique traveling experience, ride the horse-drawn carriage. Take the cog railway or the Furi cable cars to reach the mountains.
